Basically an "E4" Error Code means that the Carriage Assembly is locked, or stopped during operation. There is no Home Position Sensor for the carriage assembly. The Home Position is detected using the Carriage Encoder Sensorand Timing Belt, as the Printhead Assembly hits the rubber bumper on the left side of the carriage assembly. If blowing out the sensors has no effect, then the most common problem with an "E4" service condition on a "DFX-8500", is a bad/failing REAR COVER INTERLOCK SWITCH. After that, its usually a failing/bad Carriage Motor. The interlock switch is basically the safety shut-off switch for the Top Cover, located on the back left side of the printer, from the front. A metal arm/protrusion on the top cover, pushes in on the switchs lever when it closes. If the switch is going bad, then it cannot always tell that the top cover is closed. That switch shuts down the Carriage Assembly operation for safety reasons, when the top cover is opened. You can remove the wires connected to the switch and jump them with a paperclip, to bypass the switch for testing purposes only. Once bypassed, if the "E4" Code is gone, then you know that you need a new switch. If the "E4" is still there, then its of course possible that the Carriage Motor that drives the timing belt and printhead assembly is also going bad, but there's no easy way to test it, like a failing switch. At least you can eliminate the switch first as a possible problem...TECH NOTE: On any FATAL ERROR service error, if the printer is not shut off with-in 12 seconds, the power automatically shuts off for a minimum of 5 minutes. If you try to turn on the power at 4.5 seconds, it will just add another 5 minutes to the counter
