Canon MP480 cartridges refilled but printer thinks they are empty

I have a Canon MP480 and the ink cartridges were refilled instead of replaced. Now the printer thinks the cartridges are empty and gives an error U163. Is there any way to reset the ink levels on the printer so it will let me print? Thanks for your help1

Hello kathryno66,
Usually if you press and hold stop or reset button for more than 5 seconds it will reset the ink level.
But that doest work you can reset the whole printer by following below steps.
It is basically a modified reset procedure for Canon MP460.

  1. Disconnect the power cable.
  2. Hold down On/Off button.
  3. Reconnect the power cable.
  4. With the power button still down, press the Stop/Reset button twice.
  5. Release the On/Off button.

    3. Wait until “Without Cleaning” is displayed and then presss the Stop/Resetbutton once.

    4. A test page should print.

    5. Open the cover. (the cartridges should position themselves at the far left – thecartridge removal location)

    6. Disconnect the power cable.

    7. Remove both cartridges.

    8. Close the cover.

    9. Reconnect the power cable.

Thanks but I can't seem to get the printer into Factory mode. If I unplug the printer, hold down the On/Off Switch, plug it back in then hit Reset twice, the light goes from green to yellow then yellow to green and just has a blank display. Any suggestions? Thanks1

Why lexmark 3550 won't print after installing new ink cartridges

Check your manual for instructions about this type of problem. Are you using the ink cartridges meant for your printer? Sometimes using refillable cartridges instead of the manufacturer's cartridges can cause the printer to still think the cartridges are empty, and display an 'on-screen' message that they need to be replaced, which could stop the printer from engaging. I have a Canon Pixma printer, installed refillable cartridges, and now the unit displays a 'cartridges are empty' message on PC screen; but the printer still works. The system just recently went into a non-printable mode displaying a more convincing message that the black cartridge is EMPTY, and completely stopped printing. The solution to this: press and hold the Stop/Reset button for about five seconds, and it overrode the issue and started printing. Moral of the story, maybe its best to just buy the manufacturer's printer cartridges.

How to reset canon mp480 ink level

you don't have to reset the ink level counter if you dont want to it is not necessary for this model, i have one myself i do my own ink and i never rest the ink level. After changing the ink cartridges or refilling whatever you choose (i refill mine and get 9 refills from every cartridge!) when you close the lid and let it reset, it will tell you a new cartridge is in, or you may get an orangy or red error, just press and hold stop on the actual keypad on the printer under the lcd screen until error goes. Now you are good to print, but your printer levels are not usable that's all. Its a quick fix and you can just do it every time, no fuss.

I refilled ink cartridges but printer/computer think the ink has run out

This model Canon printer may only let you use genuine Canon/Epson printer cartridges. If you try to refill these ink cartridges it will not work because the Canon cartridges have an embedded chip in the cartridge that detects the empty cartridge even though it has been refilled.

The cartridge

Is this a Canon ink cartridge or a refilled ink cartridge or an after market type. If it is not a Canon ink cartridge then printer will reject the ink cartridge.

Can i use pg-40 ink for my canon mp480

Sorry you can't use PG-40 on MP480. Canon MP480 printer takes only Canon PG-510 Black Ink Cartridge, Canon CL-511 Colour Ink Cartridge or Canon CL513 Colour Ink Cartridge (this one is high yield colour cartridge).

I have installed refilled cartridges but it still says "ink is running low", how do I make the printer accept that the cartridges are full?

That will happen with all refill cartridges on many Canon printers (I own 3) I have attempted several types of refills on the MP620, MP480, and the MP610 and none have worked yet, I went to my local cartridge world and their tech there confirmed it. I believe they're trying to get a solution to reset the chip on the cartridge but as far as I know nothing is available yet.
Good luck

Replaced ink cartridge and it still says low ink

There is no way to reset the ink levels on this type of cartridge. Therefore, your printer will always think refills are empty. You can choose on the dialogue box to "ignore ink levels" and run the cartridge until it is empty. This is just one thing you will need to deal with on refills of this cartridge type.

Where is the reset button? I've refilled the cartridge and it still says it's empty (canon MP480)

this model uses a chip resetter avalible from most people who mfg. refill the brand & make of printer and see if you find a reset procedure. there are three different resets on cannon printers.if you do override it you will not be able to see the ink levels but if you reset the cartridge you will see all as a new cartridge.
