Can you see your file system on other machines? If so, we know that it is machine related.

However, I am guessing that the drive appears to be unformatted or has a different filesystem organization.

Go to

  • start
  • control panel
  • administrative tools
  • computer management
  • storage
  • disk management
You should now see the disk as Windows sees it. If it shows uninitialized space. That would be bad. It might show hidden partitions, etc. hat would be better. You might be able to change the status of the partition.

If you don't have any information on the disk. You can just reformat it by doing a right click on the disk.

I hope that helps you get a little closer to a solution.

Sorry, I missed your reply. If you have no data on it, you should format in the disk management. As I recall, do a right click on the drive. Now select the entire space and format with NTFS.

If you need more help, I will check for your response. If you get a chance, please rate my help.

I can't access my western digital external hard drive to any computers..How can i do?

Sometimes when a flashmemory stick or USB external hard drive fails because it was not removed fromthe USB port properly. If the device is removed byjust pulling it out of the USB port, it can cause the flash device to fail, youmust click on the Safely Remove Hardware icon on the Task Bar and select thedevice you wish to remove and only do so when instructed to do so When the flash memoryUSB hard drive device appears to malfunction it maybe possible to restoreit by reformatting it. Insert the flash or USB hard drive into the USB port then Click on Control Panel - AdministrativeTools - Computer Management - Disk Management. Then right click on Disk 1removable drive and click Format. After the flash drive has been formatted itwill indicate that it is Healthy.

Unit downloaded fine ad the did the back up of the drive fine.started the updates and the firmware stopped and then the drive locked up how to access the drive again after reboot nothing shows G: F:

  1. To restore the Western Digital icon to the drive letter for the external drive in "My Computer".
  2. Please go to the Western Digital Download Library and download the WD Logo Icon which has a file name of External when you download it.
  3. Save the file to your desktop and use a file compression software like Winzip to extract the files inside the .zip file to your desktop. When it's unzipped, it will create a folder named "ExternalIcon" on your desktop.
  4. Double-click on the ExternalIcon folder. It will open a Windows Explorer showing a folder named, Autorun, and a file named, Autorun.inf.Double-click on My Computer and it will open.
  5. Double-click on the driver letter that represents the Western Digital drive you want the icon on and it will open.
  6. Highlight the Autorun folder and the Autorun.inf file. Right-click on them, and left-click on Cut when the Menu appears.
  7. Right-click in the open space of the drive that you opened in the new Explorer window, and then left-click on Paste.
  8. Close both Explorer windows, safely remove the external hard drive by using the Safely Remove icon in the system tray, shut down the computer, and unplug the external drive from the computer.
  9. After you reboot into Windows, reconnect the external drive to the computer again, and the Western Digital Icon should now be displayed with the drive letter in My Computer.

If these steps do not correct the problem, you will need to re-format your External Hard Drive ***WARNING*** FORMATTING A HARD DRIVE WILL ERASE, YOU WILL LOSE, ALL DATA

Western digital external hard drive ,flashing green light when connected to the pc , stable when not connected , pc does not reconise hd , but picks it up in the bios

I take it that you are using USB 2.0, if so try another port preferably one at the back of the computer. Also check if the drive is present in MyComputer - Properties - Manage - Disk Management. If it, is make sure that it has a drive letter assigned to it.
