This is doin my head in!

I have an acer aspire t180/ sempron 3500+ I'm running vista home basic. About a week ago my pc got a virus called infostealer.gampass. Since then I've all kinds of other problems with other virus's being added. My pc and applications still boots up and works but when I go on the net my browser opens up loads of sites which in turn ad more rubbish. My norton anti-virus cant remove the problem/ the problem no longer comes up in any scans???
I've had enough now and would like to reformat my pc if I can. Can anybody help?

Thanks all, this time the simplist answer seems to have done the trick. I uninstalled norton and put AVG on, run a full scan and it came up with 30 trojans, (none of which norton picked up?) anyway no more probs whilst using the net so far. thanks again : )

Avast Free is probably the best it will do a boot scan before going into windows. Use the quick links for registration and download. The problem is the Operating system. Windows remembers the last configuration and loads that when it boots, so if the last config had a virus and you remove it when you reboot, it is still there.

I have an Vista running Acer Aspire t180 desktop that i bought in 2008. i would like to restore it to its factory settings but i have misplaced the restore disks and Alt-F10 does not work. My eRecovery was...

Your options are either go to Acer for a replacement Vista recovery DVD or
Install a borrowed Vista DVD, must be same Vista Basic, Home Premium,
then use your registered CD key, normally located on the side or rear of your tower.
It will also tell which Vista type you have. You then must go to the Acer support site
and install then drivers for the componenets in you computer.
You will not have any other software installed that may have come with your
original setup from Acer. This option requires more work on your part, but
no cost to you. Acer will charge for a Recovery DVD, plus S&H.

Can you downgrade from vista to xp on an acer t180?

Of course you can.
The only concern would be drivers, but all drivers that exist for Vista exist for XP as well. Just go to Acer's download page (link) and download all necessary drivers before you downgrade. (this is especially important for your Chipset and LAN drivers, so you have them handy when you reinstall.

The site is a little it confusing, but after you chose "Desktop -> Aspire -> Aspire T180", you will see a small drop-down menu, where you can choose your operating system and your language.

If you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.

I tried to upgrade my acer t180 to windows 7 from vista basic, no i"m having dmi problems... seems like it's stuck... help please

Hello kelajo34,

There might be a Desktop Management Interface (DMI) compatibility problem with Windows 7 and the Acer T180 Vista Basic DMI. The Acer support Windows 7 eligible systems link shows all the Acer computers that are fully compatible with windows 7. (Acer T180 is NOT in this list !):
http://www.acer.com/windows7upgrade/eligible.html

Also, It might be a good idea to run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor before upgrading from vista basic to Windows 7 on the Acer T180. The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor download link is at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1b544e90-7659-4bd9-9e51-2497c146af15&displaylang=en

If this solution is helpful please click a thumbs-up rating below.

Driver missing

I think the virus was not yet deleted in your system and the virus are blocking some of the drivers in your computer, format your computer in normal way. And try re-installing it.

Missing Vista home basic product number

Acer gives you the option to create your own cd's. Click the start button & go to all programs. Look through the programs installed. Someting like DVD pro. or nero. There is a program in there so you can creat your own set of restore cd's. The reason your PC is so slow is because Acer loaded the system up with a ton a junk you'll never use. (Can always return it). I would befor the warranty runs out.........

Good Luck!
