Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

With a Ruud air conditioner, it will run for 15 minutes, then it will shut off. If I push the test button, it will usually start back up again and run for 15 minutes before shutting off again. When this doesn't work, resetting all of the breaker switches with the thermostat off, then turning the thermostat on, and pressing the test button will run the air conditioner for 15 more minutes before shutting off again.

If the air is still flowing but gets hot, I would suspect a control relay to the compressor. Is the compressor still kicking on after that 15 minutes?
If the compressor is still running after the 15 minutes then you are low on freon and the compressor is heating up causing the system to have to be reset

If the air flow is blocked, I would suspect that the accumulator is "freezing up" from the condensation on it and blocking the flow.

the other thing that you can check on is the thermostat and make sure that it is working correctly

There is a code, d5, that is constantly shown throughout. There is no diagnosis for this code in the manual.

The compressor is not running after the 15 minutes, the signal light from the thermostat appears to go out, then come back on, but the compressor and fan do not kick back on. At this point, if I press the 'test' button, the fan and compressor will start to run for another 15 minutes.

There is no block in the air flow, and the level of freeon has been checked by a local ac tech.

This unit was installed last fall, 1 month before we bought the house, and the home inspection is the only time before this week that we have attempted to run it, and of course it turned on at that time for a minute or 2.

D5 error code is the control board. So that means that the control board will need to be replaced. What is happening is that the control board is not sending the proper amount of current to the unit for it to stay running. Also it is malfunction the thermostat so that the unit shuts itself off. Replacing the control board is very easy if you do it yourself and can also be done by ordering it online. You can google search your model number and name of the unit and add in there replacement parts. This should solve all of your issues. Please rate.

The door, you mean the metal cover on the front? if you have the door off and push the safety switch in with your hand everything works fine? I need more info here, but if what I said is right, then the "door" isn't making good contact with the switch.
