Question about GE GSS20IEP Side by Side Refrigerator

Ge rifrig will not defrost

I have a ge gss20 side by side that will not defrost, The heating element went bad and I replaced it, put the terminator in my deep freeze on it is closing. When I frist got the refrig, a ge tech came out for a moisture problem and replaced the fan, circuit board, door gasket, And some other stuff, (he was a parts changer) so I reinstaled the old circuit board but it is still frezzing up. I don't want to say its low on freon because after I defrost it, it will work for about 10 days before it frezzes up again. The new heater is comming on (I can see where it has dicolored the glass tube) So I am at my wits end with this thing. TIA, Jack

You have a defrost issue not being able to verify circuits on the mother board i would replace the high limit, what you are calling the termination stat this stat stays closed unless the temp hits 140, thats right 140 degrees f and change the evaperator sensor.
evap sensor can cause missed defrosts or no defrosts
high limit part number wr50x10068
sensor number is wr55x10025
each part is 7-15 dollars each

Freezer coil freez up

its most likely the defrost heating element as G.E. is notorious for a poor defrost heater, you need to remove the inside rear panel in the freezer and this element is located at the bottom of the evaporator core, you can test it with an ohmmeter, its in a glass tube and if bad will pull apart,be careful of broken glass tube, the new heater is a dual tube G.E.# WR51X10101,it uses 2 tubes side by side,it will fit like the original, the only thing you need to do is route the longer pink or blue power wire down the opposite side with the other power wire because there will be a jumper wire on one side of the new heating element, very rarely does the defrost terminator go bad,if it does,to test it it needs to be below 15 degrees to test good as this is a bi-metallic switch and closes below 15 degrees

I have an older GE Profile side by side not defrosting, have continuity in element when warmed thermostat kicks off and I have replaced the timer, still not defrosting. Model #THP21PBSMWW S/N SL238841

Need to check and see if the element is heating up when it goes into defrost. If the thermostat is bad it will not go into defrost. I purchased a new heating element for my GE and it came with the element and thermostat together. Also make sure the fan is running in the freezer this moves the heat through the coil as well as the cold temp when in freeze mode.

Ge sidebyside, made in May,'02. It is not keeping things cold on either side. I have a thermometer in the freezer side and it is reading45 degrees. I have cleaned out the back and vacummed out the dust and...

I could be the same thing but there are three components to the defrost system. And this is somthing you can probably do yourself.
check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Problem with the unit not defrosting. How do I know which part is the problem? Thermostat, heater and Bracket assembly or mother board. Is there something else I should be looking at? Thanks Dan

you might have a defrost problem. Frost free models have a heating element that is controlled by a timer to automatically defrost ice, defrost timer turns on defrost heating element every 12 hours to melt ice in freezer and allow good air flow.
You can test defrost element with an ohm meter(located inside freezer coils-will have two wires going to a plug connection), if OK replace defrost timer (located in various places depending on make and model

Adaptive Defrost Control Bad?

If there is no continuity on the heating element, it is BAD. Replace the heater and the defrost thermostat at the same time.

DEF appears on freezer door and freezes up.

deF error means that you need to defrost the unit. Leave the unit unplugged overnight and defrost completely.
