Hi. Try to replace the toner first. I have a laser printer that has vertical smudge on the right side and it turns out that the shiny part inside the toner worn out.

If the smudge looks like powdery, you need to replace the fuser.

Hp 8000n is ghosting excess toner on prints. Why?

Perhaps, but first clean up the exposed parts of the printer where the toner may travel before it makes contact with the paper. Also, the fuser may need to be cleaned or replaced. Post your problem directly with HP on the HP website.

My HP 4100 printer prints with a black smudge clear down the page. I clean the roller but continues to print bad copies. Should I replace the cartridge?

Problem is either the cartridge or the fuser.
Put paper in the manual feed tray(tray 1)
Print something. When the paper gets 1/2 way into the printer, open the
top cover. Pull out the toner, look down at the paper.
If it has the smudge replace the toner. If no smudge, replace the fuser.

When my lexmark x342n prints, the sides of the copy are smudged with toner. not solid along the sides, just in three spots, where it looks like the roller rolled. if there a fix for this

Sounds like your fuser has a spot on it where the Teflon has came off. try looking in the back of the printer at the red roller to check this.

Laser jet produces printouts that are smudged and dark

Remove the toner cartridge and use a soft cloth to wipe the photo drum clean of toner. Put it back and try again, if you still get bad prints, then you need a new toner cartridge.

The document prints but leaves ghost images on the page also

A laserjet is different than a inkjet.
Ghosting is either the toner or the fuser:

This is the test to determine toner or fuser issue.
Print a test page
When you hear the paper feed into the machine open the top to stop the machine
Remove the toner cart.
You should be able to see the page with printing on it. (This is before the page hits the fuser)
If you can see the smudge or marks on the page the problem is most likely the cartridge but NOT the fuser.
If the page is clean the problem is most likely the fuser.
Hope this helps

Dark mark at the edge of the page from top to bottom when printing

sometimes dirty carona, clean with blue tab on drum, if not then usally it is the drum worn out(expected life 20 000 prints) or less often it is the fuser roller stuffed
