This is caused by the flash capacitor inside witch fills with eletricity to deliver to the flash bulb, if this is not filling or giving you a sign that its ready to flash then you got ether one of two issues:

1. Battery
2. Capacitor inside
3. or even the flash bulb

When in doubt here see a camera shop they can look it over and tell you what the exact issue is with your unit. On here we can give you the best solution possiable according to what your telling us. Please be considerate of this and leave postive feedback and ratings for all experts involved in helping you with your issue today. Thanks

All photos suddenly too dark, even using flash.

If you are sure you are in automatic mode, the green camera logo on the top dial, your pictures have to be correct.
The exposure compensation should not be available in automatic, so that can't be the reason. (if you are in automatic)
The only thing you could look for, is the exposure metering. There you can chose 3 modes, and I do advise to chose Multi-pattern (should be default) because then not only the centre is measured.
If the pictures stay too dark, while in automatic and Multi-pattern, i think your camera is defect. It has nothing to do with the battery. If the battery voltage drops beneath a certain point the camera will stop completely and not work half.

Dark pictures

Check Exposure compensation. If you have a negative number all photos can be dark with flash or no flash.

I cannot get the flash to work???

the flash is a pop-up mecanizem. on the left side by the neck strap ring, theres a little button. that button should pop the flash up. and there ya go. on some settings the flash doesnt work even with the flash up. on the screen, when its on theres a little lighting bolt, when theres a line through the lightning bolt, that means flash is off, when you have it on the AUTO setting and its fairly dark out, and the flash is up, it should automatically be on. anytime you see that lightning bolt on your camera, its related to flash.

In the tool area there is a settings page, go to it and set it to auto, I believe right now you have it set to night or evening and this causes it to go dark or vise versa. give this and try. Good Luck and God Bless.

Flash issues

If the automatic flash settings detection is on where possibly isn't dark enough.. Try to go into a completely dark room and see if it works.. If it still dont work try and check the camera settings..

Flash

if your setting is set on auto focus then it will automatically sense any presence of backdrop light, if the sensing device cannot see or seen a dark background then it will work automatically, not all condition will be met under some condition,

try focusing on a brighter image or with good light exposure, this might prevent the flash from flashing but will and should work in dark areas.

see your seting first

INSIDE PHOTOS ARE DARK AND GRAINY

Regardless of the camera make/model... dark, grainy photos are usually a result of a lighting problem. Looking at the specs for your camera, the flash is only speced for 4m. If you are shooting near or above this you might have trouble. I ended up using an external flash that is triggered by sensing the cameras flash. Pretty inexpensive and pics ar 10x better. Try a local camera shop or B&H Photo (NYC) is where I got mine set up on line.

DROPPED NIKON d40, now my pictures are all dark

First u have to reset the camera,go through the menu and select reset and yes. the camera will take default settings.Try now.

Reset the camera opening the connector cover.

You try with a different compatible lens .If works we have to change the lens.

Remove the battery and get fully charged .Operate all switches for some clicks. then put the battery and try.

Then u have to consult a mechanic.
