Dish dvr 510 was working fine for last month and suddenly last night the tv and box turned off and I have been unable to get the box to work. Help! I will have to share the main tv with my kids, and can only take so much of Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network. Thanks.

Re: DVR 510 WON'T WORK ANYMORE
Did you have a power outage last night or lightning strike? If not unplug the receiver for approxiamately 30 seconds and plug it back in to the wall plate. Try to turn it on now. If it fails to power up it may indicate that the receptacle is bad or the receiver. Swap the plug from the receiver to the known good outlet the tv plugs into and try to power it up. If it fails the receiver is dead and you will need a new one. 510 are due to be discontinued with Dish so your local provider may not have one to replace yours with and you may be left with the option of upgrading the receiver, seeing if Customer Service can send you one out if you have a warranty program or buying one from a retailer or online.

If this is a TV2 location take the remote to the location of the DVR.
Open the door on the right side of your receiver.
Press SYS INFO.
Press Record multiple times on your remote.
Exit the screen and see if the remote works, if not replace the batteries and repeat steps 1-4
If the remote still doesnt work, and this is a tv2 location (no receiver in the room with the tv) check the antenna on the back of your receiver, make sure that it is connected tightly and standing straight up.
If none of this works call Dish and ask for a new remote.
Make sure that the software is correct. Should be P4.07 you can go into the DVR and replace the hard drive but I would suggest getting Dish Home Plan, Replace the receiver and then cancel the Home Plan. Talk to Dish Network and they will work with you. for tech support go to: tech.dishnetwork.com
Unfortunately as a Dish Network Employee I must inform you that acording to Dish that is not possible however a good computer tech may be able to help you with a work around but keep in mind that if any damage occurs to the receiver that Dish will charge you for the receiver. When you do upgrade check into the receiver models that have an expansion port for an external hard drive. A 211 which is a solo hidefinition receiver without DVR can have a port activated for as one time charge of 39.99 and you can use the hard drive you supply as the DVR. Yoiu also will not be accessed the 5.98 DVR fee every month and if the receiver needs replacing you still have your recordings. Thanks for using Fix Ya.
It sounds as if your going to need to replace the receiver as the hard drive has an error on it. I assume you can record live TV. There are also few 510's in the Dish Network service area throughout the country so my suggestion is to have Dish send the receiver to your home as opposed to creating a work order for a technician to come to your home as it will be hard to ensure you get the 510 back.If you decide to upgrade to a HD receiver try to get a model that does not have the internal hard drive but also has the expansion port on it. There is a one time fee to activate this port of 39.99. This amount will be recovered in the first year by using an external hard drive eliminating the 5.99 DVR fee every month. This option also allows you to have better control of your recordings and makes them portable. They also will not be lost by replacing the receiver. There was not a software upgrade in the last month for the 510 according to Dish Network. With that being said the issue is more than likely a bad hard drive. If you have to replace the receiver ask about a non dvr model that supports an external hard drive. This will allow you to keep from paying the dvr fee every month and allow you to have better control of your recordings eg. more record time, saved recordings if receiver needs to be replaced etc. There is a 39.99 one time fee for Dish to enable this feature but it is well worth it in my opinion. You may also want to check out the line of Sling media they have available also if you are an avid TV fan.
I am sorry to hear of your troubles. I am assuming you have another receiver in the house that is an HD receiver as the 510 is not and it would not make any sense for you to have the 129 orbital without it. If you go to the other receiver and are able to get transponder 21 on the 129 bird then the issue lies in either the cabling, connectors, barrels and or wall plate, or the 510 itself. Assuming you were good to go with the hi def receiver move it to the 510 location and see if you are able to still p/u the 21 transponder. If so, the 510 is bad and needs to be replaced. If not the problem lies in the aforementioned areas. if yoou are unable to get the 21 transponder on the hi def receiver also then more than likely the dish needs to be repeaked.
