Question about Toshiba Satellite M55 Notebook

Computer repaired, now sound won't play?

I just had my laptop sent to the shop to fix it's overheating problem. I got it back and reinstalled Windows and put all the drivers on, but I'm not getting any sound. The driver is installed, but I can't adjust any of my settings in the Control Panel for my audio device. My volume wheel is up and I've already checked the volume settings. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • it might be that the service technician that disassembled your laptop forgot to connect the speakers. it's unusual but not impossible. you should go back to the shop for a checkup... after all it's not your fault that they screwed up.

I called them earlier today and the guy pretty much told me to do everything I'd already tried. Then he told me he couldn't look at it without charging me more than I already paid. Considering I feel they overcharged me in the first place, I'm not really willing to go back and pay them more to fix something that has only been a problem since they pulled it apart.

  • ok so they don't admit they're fault, i just took a look at the disassembly of your particular model you have the onboard speakers on the LCD assembly. and the audio out and mic jacks directly on the motherboard try connecting a headphone on the audio out jack and see if you have any sond (after connection boot your computer too see if at least you have the boot-up beep), if you do it's clearly the connection of the speakers tot the motherboard - therefore the guys who took it apart, and if you don't have any sound coming from that output it could be a more serious problem. (by the way do you see the soundcard in the control panel?).

  • by the way this is the disassembly guidehttp://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/To...

I don't get sound from head phones either.
Are you referring to the Sounds and Audio Devices in the Control Panel?

Ok so no sound, about the driver in windows XP go to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware (tab) -> Device Manager and if you have there a device with a black exclamation mark on a yellow circle then you should proceed as folowing: download and install following driver: http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/modelContent.jsp?ct=SB&os=&category=&moid=1042103&rpn=PSM50U&modelFilter=M55-S325&selCategory=3&selFamily=1073768663#, after that if you still have no sound install from the utillities CD Toshiba Fn-esse utility and see the manual because you have a key combination for disabling sound (eg. Fn+ Up arrow or Fn + F5...etc) (please specify operating system if other than windows XP).

Startup wont boot

Sounds like the best solution for you is to take it to a Repair Shop and have them reinstall Windows for you. If you had a legitimate copy of the windows operating system on it and there is a Certificate Of Authentication (COA) key sticker on the bottom of the laptop or inside the battery case, a honest repair shop will reinstall windows for $60 or less.

Simple test: try to boot from a Linux Live-CD, one like
http://www.pclinuxos.com/?page_id=180
If you can then something is wrong with the hard disk - try to access them in Linux and see if all the data is still there and not corrupted. If the access is difficult and full of errors then you will need a new hard disk.
If you can't access it even with the live-CD then the motherboard of your laptop (more precisely its chipset) has failed and it will have to be replaced.

You should call up Compaq and tell them that when you recieved your computer, it was overheating. They will most likely ask you to send it back. Sounds like they may have covered up the fan with a ribbon cable or something.
Thanks, Nathan Taylor

Hello,

There are errors in the operating system that's why it's not letting you to get into the operating right away. It's asking you for the Operating System reinstallation disc. If you have the disc, insert it the dvd player and restart the computer. The Disc will automatically be detected and the computer will ask you to press any key to boot to the cd. Just press any key. It will then bring you to the page which will ask you to install or repair. Just select repair and let it load. Follow the on-screen instructions. It usually work except if the operating system is seriously messed up. If no go, you don't have any other choice but to do the operating system reinstallation. But the operating system reinstallation will erase all the files and documents that you have in your computer.

If you can still get into your operating system, back up all the files and documents which are important by saving them in an external hard drive or a USB flash drive. After backing up those files, do the complete reinstallation of the operating system.

Click on the correct operating system that your computer is running in the choice below so that you will be directed tot the guide that I made.

1. Windows Vista

2. Windows 7

3. Windows XP

TV had to be sent back again for repair . and it ended up being the sound cable as I had pleaded with the manufacture to replug in without 6 weeks wait for the tv to be sent and repaired by a warranty repairer !
