Question about Craftsman 22" Rear Bag Rear Propelled High Wheel Lawn Mower ()

Mower will not start

I have checked the oil, filled it with fresh gas, and it has a clean spark plug. I took the air filter out and cleaned it somewhat. Mower started better, but ran for about 30 seconds. Is a new filter necessary or could it be something else? Please help! My yard is a jungle!

Sounds like you will need to clean your carburetor.
Sometimes you can get by with priming it a few times, and letting it
run a few times like that and it will flush the gunk out of the jets,
but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.
If the mower is over a couple years old, then I also recommend that you
buy and install a new carburetor repair kit, because the diaphragm will
get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.
When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, count the
number of turns it takes to seat the jets from their original position.
That way when you go to put the jets back in, you know how many turns
they were in/out.

Hi Hank:
Did you hit something with the mower, or did it happen gradually?
Probabaly a good idea to start with a basic service:
- Clean air filter
- Clean fuel filter
- Flush carbuerettor
- Fresh gas?
- Change spark plugs
- Change oil and filter
- Underside of mower deck clean and free of all built up grass?

Why does yardworks 173cc bs engine will start, run, for 2-3 seconds then stop


Bad gas. Drain gas and refill with fresh gas with Stabil. Old oil. Drain oil fill with fresh 30w oil, 16-18oz. Clean air filter and spark plug.. Relpace air filter if dirty. Saving $$$ on this simple tune up is not intelligent.

Remove clean or replace spark plug. Remove clean or replace air filter. Ensure oil is full. 30w. Drain gas tank fill with fresh gas with Stabile. Gas over 30 days old no good! Try to start. No start clean or replace carb.

Replace spark plug. Replace air filter. Fill oil. 30w. When plug is removed pull rope several times to blow out cylinder. With air filter removed spray starter fluid into air intake hole of air filter, try to start.
Ensure fresh gas only is in gas tank. Always add Stabil to gas. If no start clean carb or replace. carb.

Dump out old gas. Fill with fresh gas. Always use Stabile in gas. Clean or replace park plug and air filter. Check oil level. All mowers have a low oil start cutoff. 30w oil. If any grey in oil moisture contaminated, dump out old oil and refill. Check fuel line for cracks or leaking. Check primer bulb for cracks, replace if required. Clean outside of carb with carb cleaner to ensure easy choke operation. Remove carb bowl from carb, ensure float hangs down freely. float down fuel flow, float up fuel flow stops. Check bowl screw for hole thru bolt, if so clean out hole.

Check wiring for ground. Ensure battery is fully charged or replace. Replace spark plug. Clean or replace air filter. check oil level, all mowers have a low oil start cutoff. Bad gas? Flush out fuel tank by removing gas line, flush fresh gas thru. Reattach gas line, fill with fresh gas, always use Stabile in gas! Check fuel line for cracks and secure connection to carb. Battery should read 12.8 volts or higher. .

My MTD Yard machines riding mower won't start.


Probably dead gas from sitting too long. Dump it out & put in fresh gas.Could have moisture in it. Pull out spark plug & crank it over several times after putting gas & let it sit a while to dry out or blow it out with compressed air. It should go.

Poulan 6.75 Lawn mower will not start


Remove spark plug, clean and dry. Replace plug. Remove air filter. Spray WD-40 into carb opening; one second blast. Turn over engine, (pull handle). Engine should start briefly and run for 3 seconds.  If not, you are not getting spark to spark plug. If engine starts, you have a dirty carb and you can buy a rebuild kit from manufacture.

Does the belt slip going uphill or with a full grass bag? My Craftsman mower lost the self propel feature. The small pulley on the top of the transmission would slip under load, There was just not enough tension on the belt to over come it. Tried a new belt and also replaced the tensioner spring...still slipping when going uphill or with full bag. Possible pulleys worn...not wanting to gamble more time and labor, I bought a 4" 1/4" cap screw with extra nuts and flat washers, a 3"16 eye bolt as well. Drill a 1/4" hole in the bracket that holds the trans activation cable in place and a 3/16" hole in the mower deck so the holes are in alignment with each other. Put the cap screw through the 1/4" hole with the threads facing toward the front of the mower. Fasten the eye bolt into the 3/16" hole in the mower deck locking it in place with one nut on each side of the metal. Now you have the 1/4" bole protruding through the eye bolt. Using a flat washer and nut, tighten then nut easily and when there is room put a second nut on it. When you have tightened it up to the desired belt tension lock the two nuts together using two wrenches. Note...do NOT make the belt incredibly tight or you will destroy the trans in a short time. Go a little at a time till the drive does not slip under load. Good luck hope this helps. Oh....you will have to trim the plastic cover that covers the transmission so the added bolt will clear it and you can put the cover back in it's proper place.
