Question about Viking VMOC205SS Microwave Oven

1 Answer

My Viking microwave is sparking from the right side when turned on. I removed and cleaned the guide cover as I read about on your site and it still sparks. Is there anything I can do to fix this? All of my Viking units are defective. More than 30 repairs to my built in 36" refrigerator (3 units) and about 20 repairs to my double ovens. My wine fridge had to be repaired 3 times and then was replaced the first year. I have had my units for 5 years and they started malfunctioning the first week. The microwave only had cosmetic damage when delivered and was the last holdout.

Quite often this is due to grease or food particles stuck somewhere in the cavity of the oven or stuck on or in the waveguide behind the waveguide cover.

The cover and the metal behind it should be cleaned with a mild,
non-ammonia cleaner.

Otherwise, there may be grease or food particles deeper in the waveguide or even on the magnetron itself.

If the metal of the oven wall is burned or chipped, the area will first have to be sanded smooth and cleaned and dried thoroughly.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

If the cavity metal of the oven is cracked or split, you can use a small amount of steel-based epoxy such as JB-WELD to patch the crack or hole.

Once that dries thoroughly, you can sand it very smooth, then apply paint.

If your waveguide cover is burned, it will need to be replaced.

It provides critical protection for the magnetron.

Microwave when turn on making a noise and sparks comin from fan area?

follow this steps and fix it. God bless you

Waveguide Cover

If the microwave is sparking or arcing the waveguide cover might be damaged and shorting out. Try removing the waveguide cover and see if the problem goes away. If there are any damaged spots in the microwave ceiling or sidewalls, repair them and paint them with microwave oven paint. Replace the waveguide cover if it is burnt or if it will not stay in place.

Microwave Oven Paint

If the microwave is sparking or arcing on the side walls the paint might have chipped causing pitting in the metal oven wall. Use microwave safe paint to touch up any bare metal spots.

Rack Support

If the microwave is sparking or arcing near one of the rack supports, remove the support, repaint any bare metal, install a new support.

Viking vmos200 sparking

If there is spark please do not switch on unless you have confirmed the fault. It is possible that the Magnetron is leaking and sparking to the ground. As you have mentioned it was stored, it is quite possible that insect can get into the oven and create soft spots. When you switch on these will create a short and make the voltage jump and in the long run damage the magnetron.
So Remove cover after disconnecting , check for dirt/moisture in the cabin, if so wipe clean and dry, check the magnetron and area clean and use an jet air to clean off.
Now switch the microwave power on and use a cup of water to test.
If you notice any sparks shut off as the magnetron or the main HT capacitor can be faulty. Replace with same type. If not check the waveguides within the cabin for food particles that can burn and spark, check for rust that can corrode and spark when the ceramic paint has worn out.
If there is heating without any issues, you can use the microwave safely

Somtimes the wave guides with food particles can burn and smoke if so replace the wave guide.

Sharp r-930ak microwave oven is sparking

A dirty or damaged wave guide cover can cause sparks, fire and noises. You can order a replacement wave guide cover from many appliance parts websites for less than $15 in many cases. It should fix the problem.

Sparks and strange noise when microwave is turned on even when empty inside. i have a ge jvm1850smss over the oven microwave.

YOU SHOULD NOT RUN MICRO WITHOUT ANY THING IN IT / THIS WILL OVER LOAD THE MAG TUBE . AND SOME TIMES FRY IT .. The sparking and arcing is probably a bad wave guide . this is sometimes caused by food splater / it gets in the cracks and corners and then cooks till it truns to carbon which conduts the micro's and thus arching .. clean it good and touch up any burns in the metal and repl wave guide cover. mm hope this will help .. mm

The Magnetron has failed, causing the waveguide to become damaged. If the waveguide is damaged/burned the microwave can not be repaired and should be replaced.

The cover is probably the magenetron. That is where the microwaves come from. If the bread was moist, it might have left condensate in the unit which is causing the sparking. Unplug the unit, leave the door open over night. If you can remove that cover, do so. Be sure to carefully replace it before using the unit. Never turn on a microwave with nothing in it.
