First check if the wireless light on the laptop is amber even if you turn on the wireless light, then follow these steps
1. Go to device manager, Under network adaptor check for the wireless driver eg- Broadcom Wireless LAN Driver or Atheros Wireless LAN Driver, if present then right click and uninstall and choose uninstall then follow step 2, if not present then follow step 2.
2. Search for recovery manager under all programs, click advanced tab - select driver download and click next - choose the driver(ie - boradcom or atheros) - click install - restart the computer.
Then check the wireless light.
3. Do a bios update of the notebook.
from hp.com under support and driver
4. Download driver from hp.com on a different computer or from a ethernet connection if possible.
4. If still no go then Reseat the wirless card on your notebook.
Situated at the bottom pannel of notebook ,you will find a compartment with a image of tower with signals unscrew that compartment and the carefully remove the wireless card and put it back again and repete the step 2.

Hppavilion zv 6000 laptop

Had this problem with at least 50 people at work with this model.

HP sent out a bad patch for this computer's wireless card. You have to go into device manager then roll back the driver to the previous driver.

If you keep allot of restore points, check the calendar for when this driver was updated.

If you dont have a driver to roll back to, then uninstall the wireless card and then restart the pc.

When the pc restarts, it will auto detect a wireless card and install the generic Microsoft drivers for a wireless card.

Call me crazy but at work the Microsoft drivers worked 99% of the time. If they did not work then it was a hardware problem which HP has to fix.

Dell C640 wireless not working

I used Everest home edition to find the wireless drivers for my DELL C640 laptop.   The wireless card in it is an  ntel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B MiniPCI Adapter (IBM). I've downloaded the wireless driver from Intel's website, here:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=944&OSFullName=Windows*+XP+Professional〈=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go!#DRI
It's the 3rd result in that search page. If the link doesn't work, simply search for Intel® PRO/Wireless 2100 Network Connection on Intel's site.
That Dell C640 wireless driver works fine for me, I'm using the wireless card to type this :)
good luck!
