Question about Yamaha YST-SW150 Speaker

4 Answers

I have a Yamaha sub woofer model NX-SW150 that was part of a package home theater system. The original DVD receiver was a DVR-S150 which had a system control cable that plugged into the subwoofer as well as the typical RCA input plug. I would like to use this sub with my new amp (old Yamaha reciever is toast) a JVC unit that only has the typical single RCA subwoofer output. The sub does not appear to work without the system control cable being connected. Is there a way to allow this sub to work like a normal sub without this system control cable input. Can this active servo system be bypassed so it works with any amps single subwoofers output conector??

The system connector jack needs a 12V DC signal to turn on. If you don't have a suitable Yamaha receiver with this connection, use any 12 V DC adapter with a 1/8 in mono plug (the tip should be positive)."

Where does the 1/8 3.5mm mono jack get plugged into on the receiver? The RCA subwoofer output is already taken.

Parts from all-in-one packages like this aren't inended to be pieced out to other applications. Proprietary connections are a huge clue and disincentive.

I imagine the subwoofer could be opened up and whatever circuitry is enabled by the Control signal could simply be jumpered "true" so it is always ON. That would mean the amp would be drawing power at all times, though.

You need to use an amplified sub. The Yamaha receiver is only sending "Pre-Amp Signal" not amplified audio like the rest of your speakers. If your sub has a crossover built in, connect it's speaker level (wires) to the "B" side of the receiver which will send audio to your sub and it will cross it over internally. Not the best sounding, but it works. Amplified subs range in price from 200 and up. Hope this helps

Yes, that type of connector is often used for a VGA signal for a computer monitor. But in this case it is an all-in-one connector Yamaha used in order to simplify the hookup of this home theatre system. Unfortunately, the subwoofer is only usable with the DVR-S300 receiver/DVD player.
