    I should have mentioned i have all the proper updates and the game requires a much older firmware than i have.
    No error,it starts to load for a second then it just stops everything on a blank screen. i left it on for a few hours and it never recovered. i could exit out so the system was not locked up.

Hello,

Thank you for using Fixya!

Do you get an error message? Is your Firmware updated to the latest whether it's custom or the official one?

Some game require higher version of firmware. Check your game's firmware requirement and see if that is the cause of the problem.

Sincerely,
stif_nec

Hi. Since you're in UMD Autoload mode, you need to configure that in the PSP Settings. To do this, turn off your PSP and remove your UMD. Now, turn it back on and it won't autoload your UMD since it wasn't there anymore.
Now, go to "Settings" and scroll down to "System Settings" and press X. Scroll down again the selection until you see "UMD Auto-Start" and press X. At the right side will appear the options "ON" and "OFF". Select "OFF" and press O button several times to go back to main screen.
Insert your UMD. Now, try playing games from Memory Stick. You may have to turn off your PSP and turn it on again to finally play homebrew...
I hope this helps...

My psp works fine but it does not read the cassette when insert

It could be one of two different issues causing the PSP to not read discs.

1. A worn out umd drive -- it happens, especially with time. The following website will replace the umd drive with a brand new one for only $59 which is way less than the cost of a PSP

http://www.richspsxparts.com/forms/umdlensreplaceform.html

2. There is either 1 or 2 motherboard sensors that let the PSP know that a game is inside and the door is closed. One of both of these could be broken off which would cause a game not to load. If you sent your PSP to repair at the website above, they will tell you if this is the problem.

Psp always read from umd, making it hang

Hi! I incounter this problem as well even without UMD its still loading and even I disable auto-start UMD still same so I tried reflashing the software but still same problem so I discover the solution before you turn-on your PSP try to open your UMD cover you'll see it will load faster then close again the cover once you see the battery and clock icon... The problem that causing this is the switch inside the UMD possible its stock-up or spoiled already!

Psp(1001)won't read umd games or movies

If your PSP isn't reading games and/or movies and the problem isn't that your trying to play dirty, bent, or damaged UMD discs there are a number of other reasons your PSP is not reading disks correctly =

- Your UMD motor may be malfunctioning.
- Your laser may have worn down from use over time.
- Your UMD drive tray may be bent.
- There may be a foreign object in your UMD drive

Common symptoms

* disks fail to load
* extremely slow loading
* strange whirring noise when trying to read disks

PSP Error 80020148 when playing FIFA 08 UMD

alright turn off your psp by holding down the power switch for atleast five seconds. when it is turned off hold down the right trigger (the R1 button) then at the same time hold down the power switch button to get to the recovery menu. after that go to configuration then somewhere amongst all of the displayed lines one of them should either say no umd or umd required toward the end of the text. if it says umd required change it to where it says no umd. then go back and go to advance then advance configuration and disable all and this should solve your problem. hope i helped.

Psp-lazer ain't reading the games

This link should help.

  • Make sure the UMD is properly inserted with the label facing the back of the PSP system. Try removing the UMD and reinserting it.
  • Try playing the UMD on a different PSP system. If the UMD plays, the original PSP system may be the problem. If the UMD does not play, the problem may be isolated to the UMD itself.
  • Try playing a different UMD on the PSP system. If another UMD plays, the original UMD may be the problem. If none of the UMD's play, the problem may be isolated to the PSP system.
  • Make sure the exposed UMD surface and plastic casing is not damaged[2]. Do not use if plastic casing is cracked, collapsed, or if foreign materials have entered inside the UMD enclosure.

Psp not saving or loading

Hi Spazza2,

Did yout try using the same UMD game your brother was using and see if the game format has anything to do with it?  Since you upgraded, the UMD game may be old, and might not work with Version 3.71. It sounds like your PSP is working just  fine other than that.
