Question about Dryers

1 Answer

I have a Westinghouse DG400JXW1 gas dryer. The burner ignites on initial start. After approx. 60 sec. it shuts off. 60 sec. later the igniter comes on but the burner does not ignite. This repeats itself over and over. Should I focus on the gas valve coils or the exhaust vent thermostat? I notice the thermostat has four terminals.

My gas dryer, LDG512, only burns gas for 8 secs, then shuts off for 90 secs then heats for 8 secs. Continuouscycle. I replaced High Temp thermostatic, checked vents - no obstruction. Taking +1 hr to dry...

Hi

First check and see if you have 110 volts coming to the gas valve at this type of a connector. If you have voltage, then unplug the dryer and check the parts I have pointed to. Some dryers have 3 coils instead of the 2 shown here. If you do not have voltage coming to the burner, then you will need to check the timer contacts that feed the gas burner, hi limit thermostat, operating thermostats, the safety switch on the motor, and any other point that you can see on your wiring diagram picture that feeds voltage to the burner. The coils on the gas valve are very bad for working once or twice and then quitting. If you find an open circuit on one of the gas coils, replace them all = less problems later on. If the glow coil does not work (get red), check it with an ohm meter for continuity. The next thing to check if the glow coil does not come on would be the radiant sensor. Inspect the igniter for small burnt spot on dark gray or black part of igniter or check for 110 volts to igniter wire plug when dryer should be calling for heat. Sometimes the ( older style ) igniter is separate from the holder and the holder can no longer hold the igniter tight enough and the two parts burn/arc where they touch each other = new igniter and holder ( some manufactures have new kits to replace these older style parts ).
If the igniter gets red and stays red, or you hear a click and it goes off, then a minute later its gets red again then possibly have a bad set of coil valves. If the igniter gets red and stays red constantly then it’s the flame switch that is bad and maybe welded closed.

Please do rate the solution and revert for further assistance.

Thanks

Sears kenmore gas dryer 417.92052101does not stay lit.

Watch the burner assembly, shortly after starting the dryer the ignitor should begin to glow. If it glows for several seconds (up to 15 seconds) and then goes out, then the problem is probably the solenoids (coils). If the ignitor glows and stays on, then the problem is usually the flame sensor.

I have a similar problem. But I will provide a little bit of history first. My dryer just doesn't get hot enough (approx 100 degrees just prior to the exhaust vent). Three years ago, I had the same...

If the gas cycles on and off I do not think the coils are a problem.  Sounds like the flame sensor is not working correctly.  The flame sensor keeps the gas valve open after the ignitor shuts off.  Then the temperature sensor shuts off the gas when temperature limit is reached.  When the dryer cools down the gas cycle starts again (usually much more than 30 seconds).

Burner comes on for 30 secs or so and shuts off. Ignitor cycles

it sounds like the gas valve solenoids are shorting out. there are two coils that operate in tandem to allow gas flow. these coils can eventually overheat and cause the gas not to flow as well have a rattling sound from the plunger inside the coil trying to move inside the weakened coil. the coils can be replaced and will come in a pair with guide pins to help you put them in correctly. one coil will have three wires going to it and the other coil will have two wires going to it. pretty simple fix and should solve the problem
hope this helps....jay

Kenmore Dryer won't re-light after initial start

The following link explains a little theory about glow bar style igniters:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r401858-replacing_oven_igniter_gas_range

I know the link is for replacing an igniter on a gas range, but the types of igniters used and the theory of operation is still the same. First, you will need to determine if your igniter is still good. The link provides you with the tolerances you need. If the igniter is still good, I would recommend replacing the gas valve solenoids (coils). There are two of them on the burner assembly near the igniter. One is a two terminal, the other is a three terminal. One coil is the gas main, the other is the pilot position. Typically, a weak or bad igniter will not allow the burner to ignite at all. If the coils are bad, however, they may allow initial ignition, but once the burner assembly gets hot, they may shut off. I've seen this happen before. Test your igniter just to be sure, but I'm leaning towards the coils being faulty. It is strongly recommended that you replace BOTH coils at the same time if one or the other is defective. They are generally sold as a set. If you post back with your COMPLETE model number I can assist you in trying to locate replacement parts if you like. I hope this information helps you. Let me know if you require additional assistance.
