Hotpoint frost free fridge freezer the fridge not working but freezer is

Hi Reginald

Most refrigerator / freezer units chill the fridge area by venting some fraction of the very cold air from the freezer into the fridge compartment through a channel that has a mechanical air valve in it. In this way, it can control the chilled air flow, and aim for the set temperature, all the way down, in some cases, to freezing, or even colder, on the fridge side.

That vent unit, depending on your model, sill be somewhere in the wall that separates the freezer from the fridge. What can happen is that moisture condenses into the louver that slides to control the airflow, it freezes, and then system is stuck, since it's cold on the freezer side, and this keeps the louver frozen stuck. If that is the case, shutting the unit off for a while may recover function, though getting it to where ice is melting in an interior wall may be more risk of food spoilage than you'd want. Otherwise, use a search engine to look for 'how to test freezer / refrigerator vent in make/model', and you'll likely come across all sorts of youtube and step-by-step tutorials.

Good Luck!

Refrigerator doesn t get cold

If your refrigerator is frost free and been running for a year or two then here is the solution.
Why would you need to defrost a frost-free freezer? Because they do sometimes get frosted up! This is especially common if the door gets left open for long periods without being noticed, then shut again, thereby trapping lots of moist air in the freezer, which can only come out as frost. The problem is that if their defrosting cycles don't manage to cure their problems they get frosted up at the back, out of sight. If your freezer seems to be struggling to keep things frozen but is otherwise working normally you should consider defrosting it before concluding it is broken.

I have found the best way to defrost my not quite frost free fridge-freezer is to empty the freezer compartment contents into the fridge and switch it off overnight, leaving the fridge door shut and the freezer door open. By stacking all the frozen food together as tightly as possible, ideally wrapped in something to help insulate them (such as newspapers) they stay cold for a long time. In the morning I get in my scruffy clothes and wipe up the puddles caused by the visible frost in the freezer and any puddles formed underneath the appliance. However this is only half the story. To ensure all the frosting has been removed from the hidden parts of the appliance I get my hair dryer and blast warm air into all appropriate crevices from inside the appliance and from behind it.

This can happen if the fan motor in the freezer compartment is bad. Causes the freezer section to freeze up and you will not get air circulating, so no cooling. Check the fanmotor

Ice built up in the frost free freezer section

It sounds like the freezer fan(evaporator) is wearing out. This problem is very hard to diagnose because the fan spins but no fast enough to circulated the chilled air thru the freezer and refrigerator. The parts and labor are around $300.00

Freezer side is frozen, but refrigerated section is not cold

This happens when the coils frost over. That stops airflow from freezer to refrigerator. If the fan in the freezer is running read on: All frost-free refrigerator-freezers have a thing in the system called a Defrost Timer. The thing is a little clock of sorts that tracks accumulated running time. Every 8 hours of run time the thing cycles through a defrost cycle. The defrost cycle is necessitated by the humidity that forms ice crystals on the freezing coils, if the frost is not eradicated it can build up to the point where no air flows over the coils to chill the inside of the box. The Defrost timer in all boxes fails eventually from old age. When that happens, the coils frost over until they become pretty much just a solid block of ice. Most timers are located on the front of the machine, behind that removable grille under the door. The timer has a round hollow shaft through it, and can be turned with a screwdriver. Give the shaft a slow twist until a click is heard. The compressor should stop. Check the fridge in 1/2 hour to if it restarted. Sometimes the nudge will make the timer run for a while. (be sure to make it restart if it does not on it's own)If I'm on the mark you will need to get a replacement timer. The process can be repeated daily until you get a replacement.
Hope this helps.

Jimmmyj is probably on target with the timer.

Sometimes the nudge will make the timer run for a while. If this is the case, the unit will chill, and buy you some time to get it fixed. If the timer does not run, you can repeat the process daily until you get a replacement timer. If the unit does not chill, there is some other problem either with the defrost heater coils, or the thermodisk. Be advised, all that ice may overflow the pan under the unit.

Usual problem, let it defrost properly, I mean 48 hours with doors open in warm room. It is most likely frozen up inside (its frost free! no?) inside is a different matter and they dont tell you that!
