What causes a well to lose prime

Generally, that happens when you draw so much water that the foot valve starts sucking air instead of water.

An unused well has a certain amount of "head", or surplus water in it above the foot valve. The top of the water will be just about at your area's water table, the foot valve will be below that.

As you use water, if you use it faster than the water table can replenish it from the bottom or sides of the well, the water level in the well gradually drops until it reaches the foot valve. At that point, air gets drawn into the suction line & travels up to the pump as a big bubble. If the bubble is big enough, the pump loses prime (it can't draw more water, all it can do is stir that air bubble around).

Had to replace shallow well pump. Bought jet pump (used to have centrifugal pump), and installed it. Had to replace inline check valve, losing well prime. Priming pump does not accomplish the job. ...

Hi,
Aj, do you have a foot valve on the bottom of the pipe in the well?? The jet pump needs to have a foot valve to hold the water in while priming it... you also have to carefully design the system and prime it in such a way as to eliminate all of the air in the piping. A jet pump will not pull the water and expel the air like a centrifugal pump will...

I think the part you are missing is the foot valve...

My water system is loosing pressure. The pump runs until it gets to the preset of 50 psi but when it stops, the pressure drops right away. if I shut off the pump, it drops to 0 psi. I checked the pressure...

There is a screened check valve that should be attached to the pick up / suction side of the pump on the very end of the plumbing in the bottom of the well. If you have shut off the water output going to the home / what ever and the pump still drops pressure to zero as soon as it shuts off the shallow well foot valve is stuck open / has failed.

Some systems use both a foot valve and an in-line check valve to prevent the symptom you currently have.

Foot valve example:

If this valve has failed... there is nothing to prevent the contents of the pressure tank from dumping back into the shallow well.
I doubt you have a shut off on the pump suction side but if you do once the pump shuts off close this valve. I would bet your pressure tank holds the pressure. If you do not have a shut off valve... just feel for a rush of water in the suction pipe AFTER the pump reaches pressure and shuts off. If your feeling water flow with the pump off and the tank at pressure / loosing pressure the foot valve is bad.

Wont let water in and have checked all pipes and filters

Hi

When the Dishwasher is not filling in, you'll need to check for the water inlet valve, the filter screen and the float switch/assembly. Also check for the float assembly inside the dishwasher. When water is filling your dishwasher, a float rises along with it. As the float reaches a certain threshold level, it shuts off the flow of water, thereby preventing a leak. Sometimes the float can get stuck in the wrong position in your dishwasher, and it can prevent your dishwasher from filling. Sometimes it can happen due to float valve and on other occasions due to float switch. Inspect the water hose coming to the dishwasher for any blockages.
If these are fine then it's due to Water Inlet Valve. Use a multimeter and check for the continuity on inlet valve. If you don't get any value on the multimeter then you'll need to replace the water inlet valve assembly. Hope this helps... Please post back for any further assistance.

How do you prime a sta-rite mse-6 deep well pump?

Take the pressure guage off and pour water in the hole untill it fills the pump, then screw the guage back on and cranck it up. You may have to do this a few times depending on how deep in the grownd the water is.

Ice maker wont fill

Hi, It sounds like the inlet valve needs changes. Could be the plunger inside the solenoid is not lifting to allow water through. If you remove the line going to the ice maker off the inlet valve, try and cycle the ice maker and put the inlet valve over a bucket to see if water is coming out when it gets voltage.
I hope this helps. Please let me knwo if I can assist you further.

Thanks
