Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

1 Answer

Hi KyoDoc, Hope you can help me. I am Desk Side Support for a major company in Seattle. We just replaced 5 MFDs and we want the hard drives wiped if they exist. The MFDs are: Canon IR 5000 Canon IR C3220 AFICIO 2345C AFICIO 2345C AFICIO 3245C Neither the leasing company of the old MFDs nor that of the new MFDs will do this. They have offered me the opportunity to remove, wipe and reinstall. Cany you tell me if these printers have hard drives and if so, point me to references for remove and reinstall. I have been unsuccessful in both Google and Bing. Thanks Brian

Hi Brian this is the third attempt at doing this, lol..ok here we go again, yes they all do carry hdd's, the canon IR 5000 has a 5.1 gig hdd, the canon IR C3220 has a 40 gig hdd, and the others AFICIO printers all have 80 gig hdd installed, ok that was the easy bit, to format the canon's You can format some of the HDD partitions, but this just deletes the file registry. It will not wipe the HDD clean.
Press * (additional functions), press 2+8 simultaneously, then press * (additional functions) again. You should see service mode now, press Copier->Function->System.
Select CHK-TYPE. Press 1 and hit OK.
Select HD-CLEAR. Press OK.

Select CHK-TYPE. Press 2 and hit OK.
Select HD-CLEAR. Press OK.

Select CHK-TYPE. Press 3 and hit OK.
Select HD-CLEAR. Press OK.

1=image storage partition, 2=general file storage partition, 3=PDL file storage partition. 4=firmware partition and 0=all partitions, but 0 or 4 won't work from service mode. You can select them and do the clear but no formatting will actually happen.
at the moment i am at a loss for the RICHO AFICIO's but will try get back to you on them...hope this helps you can email me

Thanks for the reply. Simply deleting the file registry won't do. I must be able to wipe the drives clean. Best approach seems for me to remove, wipe, replace the drives. I can't find a service manual for any of the devices.

Hard desk can't dectet the hard desk

I would recommend TechRx, inc. for a free exam of the drive. The Hitachi Deskstar drive has some unique featues that allow a data recovery company to do firmware repair easier than other brands of drives. When a drive is not detected, it could be due to NVRAM corruption on the drive. If you find my answer helpful, please leave feedback/rank.

well, the problem is the hard drive, you have to contact the company you bought it from. ex. (best buy, Walmart, etc.) if you have warranty, you can easily get it exchanged, and if you can get it exchanged, ask if you can get your data backed up before you do, hope i helped.

Hi, my dogs knocked my Fantom Titanium-II TFD500C16 drive off my desk and it fell to the floor on its side (no bounce, just a flat drop). Now it will turn on but it does not mount. No click of death, just...

After opening it up, was the 500GB disk-drive WARM or COLD to the touch? If WARM, the drive was spinning. If COLD, check that the drive is getting "power" from your USB port, or from the AC adapter.

Can you remove the disk-drive, and temporarily connect it to another computer, to see if it is a problem with the enclosure and/or the external power-supply, rather than just the disk-drive?

Is the disk-drive still under warranty ?
Original manufacturer's warranty?
Extended warranty purchased from the retail store?
Extended warranty offered by your credit-card company?

Removing Data from leased Ricoh, Canon, IKON MFDs

I can only advise on the Ricoh machines. If you remove the 2-4 screws holding the printer interface in the machine, the entire assembly pulls out and the HDD's are easily removed from the board.
The 20xx is a basic laptop (IDE) drive the 30xx is a standard PC (IDE) drive. As for the newer 3500,4500, etc. They may be a newer SATA or the even the same (i have minimal experience on these ones), but your IT dept can identify them. You can replace these for the cost of a new drive (maybe $60-$80) - The currently installed drives are maybe 20Gb-40Gb . I believe you can only buy maybe an 80Gb these days, but that's fine. Install them and do what you like with the old ones. There should be no formatting required and all features should work as before with the exception (obviously) of anything stored in the document server /address book, etc. Scanning destinations will probably be deleted as well, however it will have no affect on printing features.
Of course 'Ricoh' or "Ikon" (owned by Ricoh) wants to replace it with their "proprietary" HDD at hugely inflated prices -but they will just be "hitachi", or "toshiba" dirves anyway.
I would not be surprised at all if the Canon machines were just as easy - most are.
I don't think you'll want to mention this to your service company, or they will likely come back at you for 'tampering' or something foolish.

This is a suggestion only , and I myself won't accept any liability for damage caused or costs incurred, should you decide to try it.

Thank you sir

You need a place that can repair a hard drive. Geek Squad doesn't do that. You could Google something like:

Hard drive repair in Seattle.

Replacing Seattle for wherever you live.

Hope that helps you out.

How to lock an Iomega MiniMax 250 GB Hard Drive?

They make chains with locks that screw to a secure surface. (floor, wall, desk, specially made etc.) You then hook you hard drive to the secure lock and someone can't easily pilfer it. Hope that helps, Tim
