I researched your unit and it has whats called an adaptive defrost control. Its a small circuit board in the refrigerator section inside the control panel at the top front. I researched the part at our supplier and the drawing clearly shows this board but it then shows a mechanical timer as the replacement so I gave them a call. What Whirlpool has done is to discontinue the ADC board and replaced it with a mechanical timer. In this situation if you need the timer I would recommend you call in a tech because some wiring changes may be required. This is the part number 2176648 which is in your unit now and will be replaced with 483493.

The second fan is behind the lower rear freezer wall. If you are having a defrost problem there will be frost present on that wall. You will need to remove the wall exposing the coils and melt the frost in those coils. This will allow the air to circulate for about 2 weeks before they clog again if the fan is working.

If you find there is a lot of frost there you will probably need that ADC board replaced. However there are 2 other parts that could be bad. You will need an ohm meter to check these.

UNPLUG THE UNIT.
Disconnect the defrost heater from the wires that connect to it and it looks similar to an oven element. See if you get a reading. Get a reading its good.

The other is a disk shaped object clipped onto the coils near the top and has 2 wires one which connects to the defrost heater. This part must be frosty cold so get it cold before you do the check. Get a reading while its cold its good.

If both are good you will need that timer.

Thanks

Where is the defrost timer?

Hi, the defrost timer can usually be found within the fresh food section of your refrigerator inside of the control panel. Although there are some models of refrigerators where the defrost timers can be found behind the kick plate in the front.

FREEZER SECTION IS FROSTING OVER ON TOP 1/3 ONLY

Sorry to hear about your problem.

Sounds like you have a defrost issue. Hence your unit is not defrosting. All of this apply's if your freezer side has ice on it. If not. you have other issues, this does sound funny, but this is why your refrigerator side is warm, or not cooling.

Here is a list of some things that can go wrong.
1. Defective heat coil
2. Defective defrost timer
3. Defective defrost sensor
4. Defective Fan
5. Defective compartment inlet damper (on some models)

You should call a service company to resolve your issue.

Since I tried to help you, Please help me and Rate/Vote on the response. Thanks

Whirlpool side by side made in 1998 is not cold. freezer side temp ranges between 32 - 40 degrees at coldest setting. coils are clean. blower is working. could thermostat be stuck or freon low? where do...

Most of the time there is an automatic defrosting problem when the freezer starts warming up. Ice builds up on the evporator coils.. airflow gets restricted and the temps warm up. Check to see that your evaporator fan is running at full speed. If it is then do a manual defrost by performing the following steps:

1. Unplug the unit
2. Remove freezer contents
3. Place a fan blowing air into the freezer compartment for a little over 2 hours. (Makes a mess... rags and Mop time)
4. After 2 hours wipe out any residual water...
5, Plug in unit
6. Reload freezer.
7. Check temps in 4 - 5 hours.

If temps are normal you have an Automatic defrost problem.
Causes can be:
1. Defrost timer / control
2. Defrost Heating Element
3. Wiring

There are other causes but timer / control or the element in a 10 + year old unit are the normal failures.

Do this step before the manual defrost
Make sure that the condensor fan in the lower rear part of the unit is running at FULL speed.and that the condensor coils are free of lint and debris. If the condensor and fan are loaded with lint it will cause warmer operating temps. Clean as needed.

If after you do a manual defrost and the temps come back to normal for at least 24 hours you will need to troubleshoot the auto-defrost circuit. If you need help at that time just respond here and I will help you.

On a Paragon 8145-20 Defrost Timer, I know you land the refrigeration circuit on terminal 4, the heater on terminal 3, but what goes on terminal "X" and terminal "N"

Link below has 8145-20 wiring diagram:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Paragon-timers-and-manuals.html#defrost

Terminal N is 2nd wire needed to complete circuit.
In 240V 8145-20, there are two hot wires.
One Hot connects to terminal 1, with jumper to terminal 2.
Second Hot connects to terminal N, and this will power the clock motor and timer.
Terminal X is for temperature or pressure termination switch.

Defrost cycle works like this:
Timer is running but switched OFF.
Refrigeration fan is ON.
Timer switches ON, defrost cycle begins.
Refrigeration fan turns OFF.
Hot gas defrost turns ON.
When temperature-or-pressure limit switch reaches trip point, it switches timer OFF.
Refrigeration fan turns ON again.
Hot gas defrost turns OFF.

Whirlpool not cooling properly

I would expect the defrost timer to stay in defrost 21 minutes. IT seems your timer is normal.
If turning the ref section temp colder made compressor come on, it could be that the thermostat is worn a little and just needs to stay on a little cooler setting. Check the freezer temp dial and It should be at just slightly more than 1/2 of available setting. If there is A B C you would want to be a little cooler than B about B and 1/4.
I hope this helps K S
