Blue characters on the keyboard when I type

It is a combination of key known as "Function" (Fn, for short). You have to press it and hold while pressing other keys showing the blue letters on it. The most common use is to make a virtual Numerical Keypad on laptops, so you can perform calculations. To be back to normal mode, you need to press FN+F8 (or the key with the Calculator icon).

Compaq Presario R3000 dim screen but not dark

Sounds like the auto-dim in the BIOS is set too low. Fortunately the Compaq R3000 allows you to adjust the brightness right from the keyboard. Hold down the [FN] function key while tapping the [F8] key will brighten the screen, while [FN]-[F7] will dim it. The settings are different for running on AC power and battery, so you must do each individually.

Removal of laptop keyboard

Removing the keyboard firstly requires the removal of the top plastic strip in order to gain access with the screwdriver to the four screws. To remove it follow the instructions at pages 137 & 138 and you are almost there.

Then on page 139&140 you will find the information to remove the keyboard. It explains all the information very analytically. You are simply unscrewing the four screws on the top side. On the bottom it is simply slided.

TIP: Be careful when you are releasing the keyboard up towards you. The flexi cable that is connected to the motherboard is quite short-fragile and does not have a lot of space to move so go slow until you have released the connector’s tabs and the cable is loose to be removed.

Please remember to remove the battery before you do any work in the laptop.

I had the same problem and the solution was pretty funny! All it was, was the little thingie that gets pressed down as you close the lid on the laptop got wedged in the hole so it didn't pop out when I opened the lid! Solution......simply pop the thing out with a paper clip!

Presario r3000 laptop 2/3yrs old occasionally the screen goes black . if i adjust screen open past 90 degrees the display returns.???how is thescreen powered from the base.??? larry thanks

The display is wired...it is flat, thin and flexible. There may now be a break point in the conductor...fixed by replacing same.

Alternative solution is to use external monitor. I'm almost certain your laptop has this capability...look on rear panel for a D-sub 3-row VGA connector. Plug in a VGA monitor and enable through keyboard Fn-(combination key)...look at key symbols for one that looks like a monitor.
