Question about Rheem 50 Gallon FVR NATGAS Water Heater 6YR 22V50F1

1 Answer

I have a Rheem 21VR75. I cannot move the dial past the mid portion of "warm" to make the water hotter. Everytime I try to raise the temperature, a few hours later, water spews from the temperature/relief valve tube. What is the problem?

As for the dial not moving sounds like a mechanical problem with the thermostat.
The T&P valve spewing is a safety device designed to release if the pressure becomes to great 150lb or temps get to great 210 deg. if memory serves. You might use a thermometer to check your water temp. at the tap. The T&P valve have been known to go bad and need replaced so it is possible this is the case. They are fairly inexpensive and easy to replace. If the need arrises to replace the thermostat, I would suggest calling a professional. I hope this helps.

Can I find an owners manual for my water heater? If not, can someone help me understand how to determine the temperature setting in degrees?

Easiest way to do this is to set the water heater in the mid range and wait for it to heat and settle down, then take the temperature of the water from the drain valve. See if it is too hot or cold. Raise or lower it a little at a time and wait for it to settle. Check it again.

Alter water temperature

Unscrew one of the panels move the insulation away from the 240 Volt LIVE wires it could be 120 volt too. look for the dial with the temperatures on it using a little blade screwdriver turn it to the temparature you want. there may be a second dial in the other door. On a natural gas unit the dial is more visible.

Raise temp above 120

Raising temperature above 120 degrees requires service call.
Or change dip switch settings and risk voiding warranty and causing service call expense.

Earliest versions of Rheem tankless 2006-8 let you set temperature up to 140 degrees F using remote.
However the hotter setting caused error codes because the burner cannot keep up with both high temperature and large volume of hot water rushing through pipe. Especially in winter with cooler incoming water that must be heated more to reach temperature set point.
The burner simply cannot keep up.
So Rheem changed maximum temperature at remote control to tepid 120 degrees, which is not hot enough for folks wanting hot shower, or folks filling whirlpool tub because water in tub cools before tub fills.

My 50 gal elec water heater model #81v52d only stay hot during a shower for 10 min how do I make the water hotter is there a dial on it?

Remove the four screws that hold the covers on the side of the water heater and carefully spread the insulation apart to see the thermostat, reset button and heating elements. The thermostat will have a adjusting screw on it that you can turn with a small blade screwdriver. There is a arrow pointing to temperature setting that you can adjust by turning the screw clockwise to increase the temperature. They normally come from the factory set at 120 degrees so you can turn it up to 135-140 and see if that helps.
Thank you and I hope this helps you.

My water is not hot

There are two access panels on the heater, remove screws to access it. They cover the upper thermostat and element and the bottom covers the bottom thermostat and element.
The top thermostat is the main one that has a reset button along with a dial to turn up the heat for the top element. A white plastic knob that you can use a flat head screw driver to turn to adjust.
Also you have one on the bottom to turn to adjust the heat on the bottom.

This is how you adjust thermostat's to increase to a hotter setting.

Rheem glas fury water heater rattling

Thermostat may be heating element hotter than normal causing a change in temperature causing the noise. You could try adjusting temp down a little on thermostat. It sounds like it's getting the water very hot and thermostat may not be working correctly.

Pilot lighting

1) Open the door on the bottom of the tank to show the burner. 2) Turn the valve to "pilot" and depress. 3) Light the match, (best if you have a candle/grill lighter), and follow the skinny copper tube from the valve to the burner inside (this is called the thermocoupler). At the end of it, you will see the pilot. 4) Once pilot is lit, keep valve depressed for a minute (this warms the thermocoupler, thus sending a signal to the valve saying the pilot is lit). 5) Let go of the pilot button (usually red). 6) If pilot stays on, put the door(s) back on and turn the valve to "on". You will hear/see the gas ignite when complete. Good luck!

What is the normal water temperature accuracy of a setting?

You are correct, the pipes have been used and they retain the warmer temp and thus they don't cool the water by the time it gets to the faucet.
