Hi,
1 to 1...
1 hp. equals 1 ton or 12,000 BTU's....at least in round numbers...
this can vary just a bit depending on the combination of condensers and evaporators...

What is the rule of thumb for computing the capacity of horsepower of air conditioner in terms of area, e.g. square meters

Horsepower does not necessarily matter. Horsepower is not computed to capacity. Amounts of btu/ heat removal, is measured capacity. 12,000btus which equals 1 ton of cooling will cool a maximum of 500 sqft depending on the heat load. Obviously a brand new home with updated insulation vs a closed in lanai with a wall of windows...you get the idea

How do i know the tons and seer of my york unit model h4db060s06a ser #wglm032b12

That is a 5 ton system but I do not know the SEER rating. See that 060 in the middle of the model number? That means 60,000 BTU or cooling capacity and that is 5 tons.

I want to replace a system

Hello
Tons of cooling is in btus.12000 btus is one ton,24000 is 2 tons.

Somewhere on your unit is the cooling capacity in btus, take that number and divide it by 12000.

Usually a 2000 sf house will need 3 to 4 tons of cooling, more is always good.

Im sending a link to do an easy calculation that should be helpful.

Need new one

Air conditioner equipment power in the U.S. is often described in terms of "tons of refrigeration." A "ton of refrigeration" is defined as the cooling power of one short ton (2000 pounds or 907 kilograms) of ice melting in a 24-hour period. This is equal to 12,000 BTU per hour, or 3517 watts.[13] Residential central air systems are usually from 1 to 5 tons (3 to 20 kilowatts (kW)) in capacity. To determine the correct size keep in mind that 12,000 BTU's equals 1-ton. Use the table below to determine the size AC that you need. Hope this helps. Area To Be Cooled (square feet) Capacity Needed (BTUs per hour) 100 to 150 5,000 150 to 250 6,000 250 to 300 7,000 300 to 350 8,000 350 to 400 9,000 400 to 450 10,000 450 to 550 12,000 550 to 700 14,000 700 to 1,000 18,000 1,000 to 1,200 21,000 1,200 to 1,400 23,000 1,400 to 1,500 24,000 1,500 to 2,000 30,000 2,000 to 2,500 34,000

Why the word ton used for airconditioner.

hi there..

this what i found for you...

The unit ton is used in refrigeration and air conditioning to measure heat absorption. Prior to the introduction of mechanical refrigeration, cooling was accomplished by delivering ice. Installing one ton of refrigeration replaced the daily delivery of one ton of ice.
  • In the United States, a standard ton of refrigeration = 12,000 BTU/h = 200 BTU/min ≈ 3,517 W. It is approximately the power required to cool 1 short ton of water by 1 °F every 10 minutes; or the power required to melt one short ton (2,000 lb) of ice at 0 °C in 24 hours.
  • A ton is also a unit of energy equal to that power for a period of a day, or 24 h × 12,000 BTU/h = 288,000 BTU ≈ 303.9 megajoules.
  • A less common usage is the power required to cool 1 long ton of water by 1 °F every 10 minutes = 13,440 BTU/h ≈ 3,939 W.
All the Best.
