First.. the burner tubes need to be cleanes...sounds like a few have soot build up. Messy job...do outside with a hose. Check the burner orifice size to make sure they are all the same.

I have a Gibson gas furnace model gl1ra072c12a, the middle two burners flame are blue both end burners are yellow . All were cleaned. as well as jets what could be the problem?

If the flames are yellow AND lazy, not acting like the two blue flames are, the problem sounds like excess carbon build up within the heat exchanger ABOVE the two yellow burning burners. If that is the case, the yellow burning flames are contributing additionally to the carbon already in there. Eventually, the lazy flames will roll out into the furnace vistibule and possibly burn wiring creating a major problem. There are looooong wire handled bristle brushes 30" long that must be used to thoroughly clean the heat exchanger after the burners have been removed. A shop vac will help greatly in reducing the nasty carbon mess.

Usually, the vent collector hood and flue is removed to brush down from the top and up from the bottom alternately. If there are air shutters on the burners, make sure they haven't been throttled too far down limiting the combustion air causing the original problem.

You need a certified HVAC service tech to look at this issue.

Flame burning too orange

You need to get a Plumber or Appliance Tech to come out immediately and check the fuel to air ratio. You are not burning your fuel at the proper mixture. A blue flame is good, yellow-orange is bad.

Normally this is because the burner area is dirty or the pressure regulator may be set too high/low. The black marks are a sure sign that your ratio is too rich and it's just going to build up more soot and become unhealthy and dangerous.

My natural gas heater is putting black soot out all over my walls and ecerything else. Could you tell me what the problem is and what to do about it?

It needs a service asap soot gives off fumes do not use it , It could be blocked air ports on the burner , burner blocked , blocked injector , burning at wrong presure , blocked flue .

Any of these but get it serviced this will all be checked when you have it done .

Heater fires up and runs for a few seconds and shuts off think the heat exchanger is filthy would that cause it.

There are several things that can cause this:

Check for blockage in the flue pipe or improper flue design resulting in inadequate venting.
One way to quickly determine a venting issue is to visually observe the flame on the burn tray. It should NOT be yellow and should burn evenly across the burner. There should NOT be any areas of the burner that appear to burned or deteriorated. Look for evidence of leaks,

You may need to dismantle the top section of the heater to visually inspect for sooting.
You may need to inspect the flame sensor mechanism (if applicable) for dirt or sooting.

If it is determined that your exchanger is sooted up, you have a blockage in the flue pipe or improperly designed flue.

When one of the gas hobs is on ,it does not burn with a blue flame but a more yellow one .also black soot forms under the burner plate.it is on lpg

Have to adjust the piolot lights for the amount of gas coming out. U have too much gas coming out(yellow flame). On older gas ranges, there was a small screw between the piolot light & burners that had to be adjusted. (if this is a older model) have to turn the screw just a little at a time, till ur flame returns to blue on ur burners. Hope this helps.

Lots of yellow - then very low heat

Are the flames still yellow? If so the burner just needs to be adjusted which is very easy? Look at the ends of the tubes that come out of the burner and end right at the back of the gas controls. You should see a small piece of metal that will slide or spin to close a hole. You want to close or open it a little at a time while the grill is burning. Adjust this until you only see blue flame or blue flames with a little bit of a yellow tip.

I just replaced the heat exchange unit. It ran ok for a while then after it got up to temperature and shut down it wouldn't turn on again by itself. Fumes. I took off the cover for the burner and could see...

Be careful opening combustion chamber with fumes present. The soot means the gas, or fuel to air mixture is incorrect. The inlet of the burner should have an adjustment that slides. That is an air coke . It may be closed or completly open. Adjust it to a blue flame. Close the combustion chamber when lighting.. If fumes build up, Ther is an explosion hazard when working on heaters. Any type . good luck
