Question about Televison & Video

Hello, I saw a solution posted by one of you experts (Chu)regarding a Panasonic PT-47WX42F model with convergence problems. My set seems to have the same bug. The green screen went way out of whack during a thunderstorm and I suspect a chip got zapped. Chu said there were some resistors and SK-type chips that need to be replaced (costing around $300 to $350 at the service shop). I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron - SMT's, too - and if you can elaborate on which chips may have been toasted, I'd like to take a crack at getting this old PTV back in shape again (the green shape in particular). If I have to spend a few hundred dollars, I'd probably just get a new set, anyway. Thanks, , ,

Have not completed the recommended fix yet but it sounds like a good place to start.

The job is done replacing two convergence ICs. The ICs are located on the convergence board.
The original ones are two STK-392-110. This can be replaced with two STK-392-150 that are more efficient.

The IC cost about $15/$20 each.

Here the parts:

Original one: Semiconductor STK392-110

Better replacement:STK392-150 Convergence IC.

Yes, I see these amps. I'll go ahead and change them then see how it looks. Chu had also mentioned some resistors that might have gone bad. There are about a dozen of some hi-wattage type scattered around the IC's. Are these what he was refering to? Would it be worthwhile to go ahead and replace these, too? Thanks, , ,

Yes, better testing continuity on resistors on convergence board (read Ohms with power off ensuring the resistors are not open). The resistors at the base of the IC may blow when an IC is lfunctioning. Check also if any of the capacitors is bulged or burnt and leaking. Convergence ICs are power amps, when they fail they cause an abnormal draw, this can often blow nearby components. Check also the resistors near to convergence board connector, they may also blow when ICs fail.

I have a 2002 Panasonic Model PT-47WX42F I have a red shadow in the screen. In other words when you see the channel info there is a red shadow of the same info. Whats broke? Mike

This is a convergence output IC problem. convergence board would have to be removed - remove and replace 2 STK IC's and check the surrounding resistors.Shops usually charge between $200-$300

No voltage to convergence chips

There are usually 2 micro fuses that resemble 1/4 watt resisters around the power supply, and are usually all green, tan or yellow, and in most cases will have a + or - voltage marked right near these fuses 20 to 25 volts dc typical.
