The universal pword is, believe it or not, 1234
Here is the website with exact instructions from NetGear itself - these instructions are for the v4 version of your router - make sure this is the correct version of the WGR614, or else this exact page will not work for you - if you have v7 instead, go to the v7 page, etc.

I have lost the security code and have a new laptop, how do i set it up to work

If you don't remeber the wireless security code, maybe you still remeber the user and password to access the web management interface of the router.
Then you have to connect the laptop to the router by using a network cable. Open a browser window, type in the IP adress of your router and check the wireless setup section. There you can find / modify the wifi security code.

If you don't know the router's IP adress, then open on your computer a ms-dos prompt and type the command
ipconfig /all

it will display your current IP adress, subnet mask and GATEWAY. The gateway adress is the router's IP adress that must be typed into the browser.

If you don't remember the user and password for accessing the router's web interface, please refer to the router's user manual in order to reset it to factory default configuration, and then proceed as for the first installation of the router.

Hope it helped,

My WRT54GL was given to me by my relative. She forgot her password. (my moms) The mechanism works. Just no password. How would I reset her unknown password? I'm sitting here tryin to set it up...

Hey there, I actually just finished typing a solution to someone else on how to reset your lost password so I'm just going to copypaste it since it's quite big ^^

Hey there, To fix this problem we're going to try and access the control panel of the router and changing the password again. Since you haven't specified the router's brand or type I can't say what the default password for your router is, however usually the password will be written somewhere on the router, along with the IP adress to access the control panel. If it isn't, check which brand and type the router is and go to this page to find out. If the IP adress of the control panel wasn't listed on your router, you'll have to find this out for yourself. Usually you can access it by going to If this shows you a page or a popup to log in, go ahead and skip to the next alinea. If not, follow this guide to find out your router's IP.

If you have ever changed the password, you can restore your device to the factory settings to reset the password to the default one. This is usually done by pressing the small reset button on the router for about 20 seconds.

Now assuming that you got both your router IP and username/password and you can log in, then you only have to change the wifi password again, it should be fairly easy but once again I can't give a detailed guide on that since I don't know the router type.

I hope I was able to assist. If I was, please don't forget to rate this solution

I can not remember my wifi password. How do I reset to a new password?

Connect tot eh router with a cable and access the wireless setting through that. If you can't do that you would have to reset the router to default and then rebuild your network.

New costomer connected to broadband but cannot connect the wireless

go to your computer broswer
1. type in the adress bar - this should open your router properties. if it doesn't please post the make and model number of your router here so i can look it up. will need to put in passord , usually User:admin password:admin
3. look at the status screen and verify that the wireless on the router is enabled.
If it is not enabled, we will need to change a setting there to turn it on. again if you post the make and model numbers here i can look this info up in advance.
hope this helps.

What is the model number of the router that you have? By default the IP of the router is,or depending on the model of your router.Just type that on your address bar. The username is admin password is password. To reset the router properly press and hold the reset button for 10 seconds and then unplug the power for 5 seconds and then turn it back on.after that access the address of the router and you will be able to configure it by then.
