Question about Quantegy 456 Reel-To-Reel Recording Tape

1 Answer

I have a sony TC-660 reel to reel player, it had been in great condition, and i love using it. All of a sudden however, the reels will ONLY move in one direction (clockwise for the left, and counter clockwise for the right) which seems to be the way the move to fast forward or rewind. During playback mode they pull against each other and it won't play properly. The direction changing switch seems to do nothing to fix this. I don't know how it got stuck like this, but AHHH HELP ME!

YES! indeed i discovered this shortly after posting. i removed the faceplate, and found that the contact plates that are triggered by the directional switch had gotten too bent and it seems as tho all three were always touching each other, causing the capstan to be stationary for tape play in either direction. I did my best to straighten them back out and it now functions fine! thanks

In order to maintain tape control and tension the reels always pull lightly in opposite directions during PLAY mode. The capstan moves the tape in the desired direction at a precise speed. If the capstan doesn't engage the tape BETWEEN itself and the pinch roller you'll get the reels battling over control of the tape. Check the tape routing.

My sony tapecorder tc-330 vu meter shows only one side working with the needle fluctuating, what causes that?

I have had that in a TC-366, the diode and a capacitor were the reason but you will need Technician tools, meters ans a soldering station to get the unit fixed. Sometimes the meter movement gets
knocked out due to abuse or shock. Does it move at any time as when you turn on the deck?

I have a sony TC 530. Fast fwd and rewind work

You need to replace the motor run capacitor. It's a small aluminum can looking thing with three wires right next to the motor; they often leak paraffin wax into the bottom of the case when they overheat. Whether or not yours has leaked it's easy to replace if you can use a soldering iron. Search eBay for a Sony reel to reel 1.5uf 250VAC motor run capacitor - they're less than $15 and come with detailed instructions.

Sony Reel to Reel preamp board.

Hi,

Did you ever get your schematic? I recently got the Model 260 and it has the original owner's manual. I could try scanning the page for you, if you still need the info (if you think that would help you).

Sony TC 530 tape speed problem

If it's slightly faster than normal, that's fine. You'll just need to check the rollers and tighten them slightly as well. They might be loose or sort of that.

Sony reel to reel TC -765

I too had this problem with my tc765. I found the two pinch rollers were not lifting up and fully pushing the tape against the rotating capstans in the play/record mode. Solution to my problem involved partly dismantling the pinch roller assembly, cleaning off the old solidified grease and re-lubing with a molybdenum grease. Note: the top plate has to come off first, then the rotating guides and tensioning pegs. Then the cast head cover and flap. It was a time consuming operation, but well within the scope of competent DIY in my opinion.
