OK. Toshiba took off the bios password...right? So you get in and see all your settings? If the password is stored on the hard drive it's in the firmware and will be tough. But...if it's only in the bios ( actually cmos ) we might lucky, not sure. Would you be willing to go into your bios and write down ALL your settings, and then take out the cmos battery if I told you how to do it? Have to take off the bottom to get at it. ( just several screws ). You'd have to leave it out for 24 hours. This would clear all the settings and hopefully clear the password. Let me know please. Thanks. I apologize for the time it's taking.

If you can get into the bios, some laptops have the hard drive lock/unlock feature in the bios. Did you try this? If it's password protected in the bios, did Toshiba happen to tell you what the bios password was? It may be the same one you're looking for. I'll check your reply and I have one more thing to check for you and I'll get right back to you. I know you're in a hurry.

How far does it get? What is on the screen when it stops or reboots? What's your operating system please?

Hello Oldnovii

Yes the BIOS has a hardsrive lock/unlock feature but thats wherethe password needs to be reset. No TOSHIBA did not tell me what the BIOS password was Client had to pay $ 25 to get it removed now they want $ 100 to remove the hard drive lock.

Hello Oldnovii

Yes it still does ask for a password. The hard drive is locked and cannot be accessed even with a boot ce or locking out the hard drive in the boot sequence in the BIOS setup

Hello Oldnovii
This Toshiba notebook has both a BIOS and hard drive lock on it. The client has already paid $ 25 to the Toshiba depot to have the BIOS lock removed now they want $ 100 to remove the hard drive lock. The hard drive lock cannot be removed by trying to bypass it using a boot cd or disabling the hard drive boot option in the BIOS. Any help will be appreciated since my client has now had the notebook for 2 weeks and cannot use it. Thanks

Toshiba c650d not booting up

Most typical reason for Toshiba laptop not booting up is a defective hard drive.
If you have a Windows disc that came with your laptop, then find an inexpensive hard drive at a retailer that enables you to return the hard drive within 14 days......and replace the hard drive. Make SURE the hard drive is a 2.5 inch model and that it is a direct replacement for your notebook. (Call the vendor's tech support if necessary to ensure compatibility).

If you are able to reload Windows, then your problem is fixed. If not, return the hard drive and take your notebook in for a repair estimate.

A series boot problems

Aseries laptops are very good normally but don't boot up if there is a device in the USB slot or a CD/DVD in the drive.
If it still refuses to POST, remove the AC Adapter, remove the battery and remove the hard drive.
Power the unit up without the hard drive and it should complete POST and complain that there is no hard drive. If that doesn't work remove AC adapter, ensure battery is disconnected and remove hard drive and RAM. Try again. If it still doesn't work, you have a mother board fault and it needs a service centre. www.Toshiba.com will help you out.
If it does work at one of the options, when you have closed the laptop down, replace the RAM first and test, then the Hard Drive.
Hope this fixes your problem.

The maximum size hard disk you can install in your Toshiba depends upon the BIOS. The BIOS can support a hard disk up to a certain capacity. Check the specification of your model Toshiba to see the maximum hard drive it can support.
An alternative -
You can use an external USB hard drive and connect it to your Toshiba and not be restricted by the BIOS. You can use USB hard drive 500 Mb to more than 1 Tb.
The other advantage of using an external USB hard drive is you do not need to install Windows, the device drivers and your programs on the new hard drive.

Your drive is failing and you should back up any important data you need onto CD/DVD or an external USB device (hard drive/pen drive). The drive may keep working for a while but your system is warning you that it has detected a critical error with the drive and failure is imminent.

I need to replace my hard disk notebook with a bigger capacity hdd

Toshiba is rather secretive with their documentation. It is hard to find. Google TOSHIBA SATELLITE A10 SERVICE MANUAL and check the available offerings.

You now have a 5400 RPM, ATA 100 drive. You should not have any drive size restrictions. Shops are advertising many large drives as compatible.

I suggest that you purchase only a 7200 RPM drive. The faster speed will perk your machine right up.

I have not worked on Toshiba machines but suggest you have all restore disks and passwords at hand.
