Hi kwcrocker, nothing fancy. Do you have your manual for the DX300X? If yes go to page 51.
Gateway suggest that you shut down the PC & un-plug the power cord. Than press & hold the power on button for a few seconds. This will drain the remaining power stored in the PC.
Stand in front of the PC so you are looking at the front of the case. It's the right side panel that you want to remove. There are two thumb screws you need to unscrew (they hold the side panel in place). Once removed there is a beval that bends outward in the middle of the side case panel. Grab it & pull it to you're right. Installing memory is shown on pg. 55.
Home page for you're DX300X listed below.

Suggest you add to your favorites.
Can't find your manual, download it from the link.

Good Luck kwcrocker!
If I can be of more service, just ask.
Mike

The side panel slides off after you press two buttons. No tools are needed.

Look for a Black button on the front of the case (Not the power on button) push it, And the top of it should pop up, If it doesn't pop up lift it up.

Will; a radeon hd 5450 work in a gateway 300x desktop

Ummmm, no.

The old Gateway 300X desktop computer has only white PCI slots, to install a graphics card in.

More info on PCI technology,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_local_bus

The ATI Radeon HD5450 (No matter who remakes it. VisionTek, Sapphire, etc) uses a PCI-Express x16 slot, on the motherboard,

More information on the PCI-Express technology,

From the link above's info on the Gateway 300X, it uses an Intel Pentium 4 at 1.8GHz, and uses old SIMM ram memory. (Single Inline Memory Module)

Not EVEN a gamer computer for today's games, no matter how you upgrade the graphics card.
(Not trying to be harsh, just telling it like it is)

(If you want to upgrade the graphics, use a PCI graphics card, IF there is any open, available PCI slot on the motherboard.

A) BEFORE you install the graphics card, stick that CD that came with the graphics card, into the optical drive. (CD/DVD drive) F-I-R-S-T.
Load the software on the disk.

B) Now turn the computer off normally, then unplug it from power.
Observe Anti-Static Precautions.

Anti-Static Precautions:

Your body carries Static electricity. Static WILL fry out (Short Circuit) the delicate hardware components inside a computer.

1) Work on a table. DO NOT work on a bed, couch, or directly on a carpet floor. These are HIGH areas of Static.

2) Computer unplugged from power, computer case open.
TOUCH the metal frame (Unpainted surface) of the open computer case.
This action will relieve your body of Static.

Should you leave your computer in the middle of working on it, be SURE to Touch the metal frame again upon your return.

C) Install the graphics card into the computer. Close the computer case, plug into power.
WAIT 1 minute, turn the computer on.
{Don't forget. You have to plug the monitor cable into the graphics card now, not into the computer's I/O area }

PC Model#Gateway mfatxnin das 300x ...Something

ok you need to goto the microsoft web page
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

but unfortunatly you need a xp disk to do this
i am unaware of anyway to fix it without the disk as you need to rewrite from the disk to get windows working
if it was an oem install then forget it you need the oem disk
if YOU installed xp just get a disk that is compatable with your version

(PLEASE READ THE WARNINGS ON MS PAGE FIRST)

Open the tower

Check the case to see if there is a button at the bottom of the back of the case. Sometimes the thin cases like that, similar to dell, open like a book.

I have a Gateway 300x Micro-Tower case circa 2002 and I can not open the case, without breaking it.

There should be 2 buttons you can press near the side panels and then they just slide right off.

Open Gateway ES2 300X case

Most of these towers are vertical style, therefore the big button is just to the left of the Gateway symbol. Push it in and pull the left panel away from the case.
