I have the same model with what sounds like an identical problem. When the problem "acts out" it usually does so in about 5 minutes of turning on the set. I replaced the bulb but the problem remains. I will try bypassing the power strip.

When the TV shuts down for a malfunction the LEDs on the front panel blink indicating where the problem might be coming from. What are your LEDs doing when the TV shuts down?

Do you have your TV plugged directly into the wall? You cannot plug into a power strip, it needs its own direct power source. Also, I have heard that there can be electrical problems inside. I have this same model, I love it, picture and sound. I just replaced the bulb for the first time last night. It was a little premature to replace it now but I know what caused it. I bought a new bulb and it works like a gem. If you ever need to change the bulb do it yourself. It takes maybe 2 minutes. The bulb looks like the Flux Copassitor and all you do is remove the door in the back on the side. Unscrew the the 2 screws that hold the bulb in and just pull out. When you put the new one in make sure you do NOT touch the glass on the new lamp. Just slid it in and screw the 2 screws back in and make sure the door is closed and tight. My uncle had a service guy do his and he got raked for 5-$600, The bulb costs about $200. Should last about 5-6 years at a rate of 5-6 hours of TV on time. Hope this helped. If not, sorry, but at least you know how to change the bulb. Good Luck!!!

My JVC HD56G786 rear projection tv is not powering on anymore. I have recently replaced the bulb (as I've done once in the past) and it worked fine for about 4 weeks. This weekend it began powering off...

It may be a fan or a power supply issue, as you said.

If there is a fan or other cooling device near the bulb, make sure it is operating. If it is not operating, replace it and see if it works. If it is a fan problem, you will notice because it will shut off soon after heating up, or after the cooling component is detected as failing.

If this does not fix it, it is probably a power supply problem. This is worse for you because it is more difficult to repair. Self-repair of such issues, even with people familiar with other electronics, may be difficult because of the wide variety of televisions out there. I would recommend that if you determine it is this problem, call a local television repair expert and have him/her take a look at it.

52G786 ATSC Tuner no longer works

I have the same exact model tv...Love it...ATSC tuners is in definition an Analog tuner. As the broadcasting companies change over to Digital broadcasting before the deadline in Febuary 2009 more and more local or Non-Digital chanels are becoming obsolete. You would have to purchase a converter box for your tv if your not planning on getting cable. Another way to gois if you have an old cable line running through you house (no incomming cable) plug you tv into that jack. That also acts as a antenna. The sweet part of all this is that your tv do have a QAM tuner or Digital tuner built in just need that digital antenna to pair it up.

JVC model HD-52G456 55inch TV shuts off after about an hour.

It may be that you have your tv plugged into the dvr. You would need to have your televison plugged into a reliable surge protector to protect it from surges. Your rear projection can be the most sensetive home theater component that you may have. Be careful of pulling the power from the television,, this can shortnen you bulb life. Allow the television to shut down until you hear the fan turn off. After doing this go into the menu and make sure you dont have the sleep timer set on your tv, if it is just put it back to zero.

Hope that helped....

Optical unit

I have the 52G786. These JVC HIDLA (LCoS) rear projection TV's are very trouble prone. Mine was in the shop 3 times in the first year. Now at three years old, the screen is getting dim then bright and flickering back and forth, but it's not the bulb.

You can now get a 50" 720p plasma for just under $1000, so that's the direction I am going. Fixing it is just asking to throw money out the door because it is likely to break again.
