Question about Linksys -Cisco Wireless-G VPN Broadband Router [ WRV54G ] (107013)

VPN connection issues

I switched to Time warner and could not use my VPN service to connect to my working computer since then. It always showed it's "Verifying username and password" and could not
pass it and log onto the VPN.
Any idea about the settings of the router or it's a time warner
service issue because all my log in infomation to the VPN has not been changed.

Check if you can enable "VPN pass-through" on your home router.
try diabling its security features (firewall) one at a time and try afterwards.
last option perhaps try upgrading to the 5.06 version of the vpn client.

Firewall ports need to be opened. Log into router and turn on DMZ to your computer. Find your IP address on your machine 192.168.X.X and put that into DMZ settings or open up appropriate ports for VPN

Connection issue

Hi! I believe your having some issue with your router and I will be more than glad to assist you in this concern..Time warner cable is your isp and if the computer is connected directly to the modem, you have a perfect internet connection but if you are going to connect the cable from your modem to the router and you connect your computer to port 1 to 4 of your router it will not give u an internet connection. This is what we are going to do.
1. connect your computer that can get an internet connecttion thru time warner cable to the router on port1.
2. pull up a browser and type in the default gateway of the router, to check the default gateway of the router, right click the network icon on the lower right of the task bar and click status and it will show the ip address, subnet and default gateway, ex the default gateway is 192.168.1.1, u are going to type in the default gateway ip address to the url of the browser.
3. It will ask u for the username and password, by default the username is admin and the password is 1234 or just leave it blank.
4. It will pop up the setup page of the router and you have to look for the setting for doing a mac clone, you need to clone the mac address of your pc that can connect to the internet thru time warner cable modem.
5. once its done, save the settings and on the internet connection settings, manualy configured it to auto-dhcp. save the settings.
6. once its done..unplg the power of the computer, router and modem.
7. cable connection should be, cable from the modem goes to the WAN port of the router and connect cable on port 1 of the router to your computer on the lan port.
8. Plug in 1st the power of the cable modem, once all lights are lit then plug in the power of the router, once all lights are solid on the router, like the power, WAN, u will notice that there is no light on the port1, computer is still off, once the computer is on port1 will lit, then power on the computer..once computer is completely boot up, pull up a browser and it should gives u an internet connection.
9. Once you have an internet connection, u can access again the setup page of the router to setup the wireless connection settings.
10. If you are going to connect another to the existing router that is conneted to the time warner cable. that is possible, but before u connect the 2nd router to the 1st router..
a. connect the 2nd router to a computer to set it up..you have to access the setup page of the 2nd router.
b. once you access the setup page, there is a menu for the lan settings that is for the router side. u need to change the 3 octet of the ip address of the 2nd router. ex your 1st router ip address is 192.168.1.1 and the 2nd router ip address is 192.168.1.1 to change the 3 octet of the 2nd route, the 2nd router ip address should be 192.168.2.1. then save the settings..
c. the router will reboot and need to access the setup page of the router by using the 192.168.2.1 and u can set the wireless connection settings.. once its done..
d. cable connection should be---cable from the time warner cable goes to the WAN port of the 1st router, connect a cable to port 4 of the 1st router going to the WAN port of the 2nd router.. this process is called cascading two routers on a network.. this should work.. good luck

Look at the number of users you have enabled in the router. If you only have 3 and you are using 4 computers, you could be getting the kind of behavior you are describing based on how many computers you have connected at the time.

I have Time Warner Cable for internet and Vontage cable for my phone thru my internet. I'm trying to connect a Linksys router for my wireless laptop. I also have a Netgear switch connected to Time Warner...

If you purchased a Linksys wireless roter then you shoul not need the switch anymore-
Try going directly from your time warner modem into the Interner/WAN port on the router and then plug your desktop computer and the vontage phone system into 2 of the ports on the router. After everything is hooked up you will probably need to power cycle for it all to work correctly.
Please power cycle in this order:

Reboot modem - then Router- then Vontage phone system.

Hope this helps

Time Warner Cable won't identify Linksys WRV54G wireless router

If you can connect directly via your modem, then the line up to your house is fine. So no problem with your ISP.

Since you changed from cable to DSL, you might have to re-configure your router.
Open a web browser, type "192.168.1.1" in the address bar and log on to the web based router configuration page. (The default values are "admin" for username and "admin" for password)
Go to "Setup", choose "Basic" and review the entries there. You want to see it configured for "PPPoE".

Some DSL-based ISPs use PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet) to establish Internet connections. If you are connected to the Internet through a DSL line, check with your ISP to see if they use PPPoE.
If they do, you will have to enable PPPoE.
User Name and Password: enter the User Name and Password provided by your ISP.

Connect on Demand: Max Idle Time. You can configure the Router to cut the Internet connection after it has been inactive for a specified period of time (Max Idle Time). If your Internet connection has been terminated due to inactivity, Connect on Demand enables the router to automatically re-establish your connection as soon as you attempt to access the Internet again.
If you wish to activate Connect on Demand, click the radio button.

In the Max Idle Time field, enter the number of minutes you want to have elapsed before your Internet connection terminates.
Keep Alive Option: Redial Period. If you select this option, the router will periodically check your Internet connection. If you are disconnected, then the Router will automatically re-establish your connection. To use this option, click the radio button next to Keep Alive.
In the Redial Period field, you specify how often you want the Router to check the Internet connection. The default Redial Period is 30 seconds.
When you have finished making changes to the screen, click the Save Settings button to save the changes, or click the Cancel Changes button to undo your changes.

Cisco vpn will not work with verizon service now after we got a new modem through verizon

Verizon Home DSL service uses a special filter that prevents ALL incomming connection including web, email and VPN hosting from a home connection. Business internet does not limit this, and I don't believe FIOS blocks it. If you have verizon home, there's nothing you can do. If you're just trying to connect to a home machine, you can try something like gotomypc, or a free alternative like teamviewer.com or logmein.com.

If you don't have verizon home dsl, comment back with what service you do have, and we can try some other things.

VPN

the following is from a nice guide i found on the net, see if it works for you: First thing to check is whether your router has any settings for PPTP or IPsec "pass through". These are commonly found in Linksys routers but you may have to hunt around for them on other makes. All you need to do is enable the setting for the VPN protocol that you're using, reboot your router and, if you're lucky, the VPN connection will come right up. Note: Not all routers have these enables and the lack of them doesn't necessarily mean that you can't get VPN working. Open up that Firewall Still no connection? The next step is to try opening some ports in your router's firewall to get your VPN connection made. In each case, you'll need to open the specific ports (and protocol) to the IP address of the computer that you're running the VPN client on. NOTE that port mappings work with only one computer at a time. If you have multiple VPN clients that you need to connect, your router will have to support the VPN protocol that you're using without requiring ports opened. If you're using Microsoft's PPTP protocol, TCP port 1723 is the port you'll need to forward to allow PPTP control traffic to pass. Figure 2 shows the Forwarding screen on a Linksys BEFSR41 set to forward this port to a client with IP address 192.168.5.100. PPTP also needs IP protocol 47 (Generic Routing Encapsulation) for the VPN data traffic itself, but note that this is a required protocol, not a port. The ability to handle this protocol must be built into the router's NAT "engine"?which is true of most present-generation routers. IPsec-based VPN's need UDP port 500 opened for ISAKMP key negotiations, IP protocol 51 for Authentication Header traffic (not always used), and IP protocol 50 for the "encapsulated data itself. Again, the only "forwardable" item here is UDP port 500, which is also shown programmed in Figure 2 to the same LAN client machine?protocols 50 and 51 must be built into your router. Tip: Not all routers are created equal! Some allow only one VPN tunnel to be opened and used by a single client. Others support multiple tunnels, but with one client per tunnel. Unfortunately, most vendors don't make the VPN pass through capabilities of their products clear in their documentation, nor do they have support staff properly trained to provide this information either. In most cases, your only option is to try a router in your specific application, and make sure you can return it and get your money back if you can't get it working. Still not Working? Getting many IPsec-based VPN setups working can be a black art due to the wide variation in techniques used by various vendors. Although IPsec products have become more uniform as the technology matures, your company may use older, more proprietary products that may not be configured with NAT in mind, or require additional ports to be opened in your firewall.
