Sorry, you do not need any driver for your Maxtor in windows.
Try first unplugging both maxtor adaptor and computer power cable from power. Also unplug the maxtor from computer usb.
Connect all back after five minutes and restart.

The above will fix problem with usb.

If it does not work it is likely that the disk is faulty or the caddy adapter is faulty or with HDD cable not well connected.
Open Maxtor caddy and check connections to HDD

That drive should be supported by most if not all operating systems without a driver.. (windows has one built in).. I did find some info saying that windows 7 has a problem with early drives. Presumably 8 and 10 would also have problems. You may find more info here:

it could also be a hardware issue.... i make alot of money from recovering data off maxtor drives that are not recognized by the bios or in windows.

I have a maxtor 6L080M0 hard drive that has crashed The return code is 7 Is there any way to fix this problem.

If the following determines you have hard drive failure then you may have to purchase a new HD. Follow what is recommended from the manufacturer below. READ EVERYTHING.

According to Seagate the makers of Maxtor, you have a DiamondMax 10 (6L080M0). See below or click here

My internal hard drive may be defective, how can I test it?

Question

My internal hard disk drive may be defective, how can I test it?

How can I determine if the problem is with my system or with the hard drive?

It is necessary to run the SeaTools, SeaTools Enterprise, or SCSIMax diagnostic before contacting Technical Support 1.800.SEAGATE (1.800.732.4283) on an internal drive that may be defective.

Answer
For Seagate or Maxtor (or Quantum) ATA drives:

If this is a Seagate or Maxtor (or Quantum) ATA or SATA drive, please download the SeaTools for DOS diagnostic to test it. If the drive is failing, the tests in SeaTools for DOS will indicate as such.

If the BIOS does not recognize the drive or the drive does not spin please reference Answer ID: 48

The operating system will not recognize a drive that is not formatted and partitioned. If you need help with formatting:

  • Windows 9x and ME reference Answer ID: 3076
  • Windows 2000 Answer ID: 880
  • Windows XP Answer ID: 3361
  • Windows Vista Answer ID: 3844
  • Macintosh Answer ID: 492

    For Seagate SCSI drives:
Please download the SeaTools Enterprise Edition diagnostic.

For Maxtor (or Quantum) SCSI drives:
    Please download the SCSIMax diagnostic.

SeaTools, SeaTools Enterprise, and SCSIMax will test your S.M.A.R.T-compliant ATA, SATA, or SCSI disk drive for media defects, perform a read test, physical head test and ensure the hard drive is functioning correctly.

If all the tests pass (no trouble found), the problem remains elsewhere in your system. Reconfirm all settings for hard drive jumpers, cables, and ATA, SATA, or SCSI controllers, and disk operating system. Consult your host controller documentation or system manufacturer for assistance with SCSI termination or ATA / SATA controller capabilities.

Purchased Maxtor ONE TOUCH III. when I had XP. Now that I have Vista, mAXTOR DOESN'T RECOGNIZE IT. iS THERE AN UP-DATE? nEED HELP. Thanks Marty xmartico@san.rr.com

    Hey xmartico,

If your recent update from Windows XP to Windows Vista has been the only major change to your computer system since you could access your Maxtor One Touch III last, you may simply need to reinstall the Maxtor software to resolve the problem.

Information provided by the manufacturer has suggested that if no password was ever set, the hard drive should work with Vista immediately with no additional work required. If you had chosen a password however, you may need to reinstall the software and reboot every time you disconnect/shut down the external drive, or disable your user account control (UAC). Please keep in mind though that disabling UAC is strongly discouraged, as it may open your computer to attacks by various malware programs including viruses and spyware.

If you're still not quite sure how to proceed, I would strongly recommend contacting Maxtor directly for further assistance.

    Hope this helps you out.

    Sincerely,
    Aaron

    Maxtor basics external drive

Hi Nuisance101, I recall your running vista. Vista is a nightmare. If you cound only see the troubles we see on a daily basis here at FixYa you'ed understand. It's a common problem with Vista not seeing USB devices, externial devices. It does & then the next second it doesn't. Same for all external devices. I'm am 100% sure the trouble is not your system or your devices. It's Vista. I have gone over dozens of post from vista users. One would think MS has been on vacation since the release of vista. You can look at vista's web site for help for a possible fix, at this link. (I have no faith). MS blames driver software. Your Maxtor drive is external. Henve no driver software.
So it falls into that vista area of one time vista see's the drive & the next it does not.
Either way I though Maxtor addressed vista issues. I prefer Seagate drives myself. Personally know lots of people who's Maxtor's drives have just gone down for no reason. Seagate bought Maxtor.

Most of the post from vista users, claim users should check vista's updates often. Since Max Blaster did its job, I'm inclined to blame vista.

I wish I could give you a better fix or suggestion but I'm up against vista. That's why I run WinXP Pro. I do not have these problems.

    Best wishes Nuisance101!
    Mike
