Hey sorry about your problem, i waited a bit before i posted this in case some other expert might have been able to help you..
Yes you are right, the problem is a common one and it does stem from the Video Output module (ic) yes it can be replaced but these players are cheap it isnt worth the time and hassle tracking down one and then having to replace it. Mostly when this happens the item is considered disposable..Thats why it didnt work when you connected it to the television via the tv output..
If you wish to try to repair it you will have to open your player and get the ic model then google for one, or a substitue(i recomend the substitute as it is cheaper and works better than the original) or you can get it at your local electronics store...

Check and see if there is dust or dirt or something on the lens. Dirt, grease and fingerprints will cause a DVD player to have read errors.
If it a new player, or under warranty, get it replaced. It sounds like it is failing.

SOURCE: Can't play region 1 dvd
You Should Be Able To Unlock The Region On The Samsung By Doing This
1. power on
2. the tray with no disc
3. press "enter" on the RC
4. then press 84269
5. press "enter"
6. the dvd player will turn off
