This is the result of the gears in the viewfinder that run a barrel style gear are misaligned or mashing.

Two Solutions:

1. Replace or clean out and reseat the gears of the viewfinder. This requires a small bit of technical camera repair expertise.

2. Now do not laugh at this one. Turn the camera ON and immediately while the grinding is going on slap the camera very hard in the palm of your other hand. Do this repeatedly until the issue fixes itself. I have recommended and done this many many times and fixed a bunch of cameras this way. LOL The gears of the motor and the viewfinder barrel gear become misaligned so a good hard jolt seems to get them back in alignment and you should be good to go.

Good luck. Stop the laughing it works. LOL

Was told by Sony that I'd need to have the camera serviced. Glad I found this site, because a couple of good hard slaps apparently fixed the problem.

Yes, this worked for me, too! Many thanks. You've probably just saved me an expensive repair bill (you can imagine the person in the shop slapping the camera on his palm 2 or 3 times and then charging £75+!!

Won't turn on, just clicks and message says turn off and on again.

There is dirt in the gears that extend the lens from the body. This repair requires that the camera be opened and these gears cleaned out.
The camera needs to be sent to Sony or an authorized repair center for repair.

My sony dsc w120 digital camera registers only blank picture when clicked with the flash on. Any idea what could be the problem? thanks in advance.

The problem is in the lens housing, the shutter is closed and not working because the motor that runs it has seized, or the gears have jammed. The only solution is bring it to a camera technician to see if he can repair the lens.
