I was going to refill my Lexmark X3550 myself but cannot for the life of me, work out where to inject the ink. Anyone have any idea? There quite simply is no soft part to put the needle into.

How do you reset the software as it still detects cartridge level low and wants to use colour cartridge instead

  • gmeddy Aug 18, 2008

in response to "under the sticker there's a trail leading to the refill spot, black obviously only has one..."

Black actually has 3 just the same as the colour cart. Should i asume that i can inject black into any of the 3???

I have a similar problem with #23 and 24 for the x4550. I bought an aftermarket refilled cartridge and the printer keeps saying cartridge error, wrong cartridge and won't let me print. Has anyone else had this problem and found any solution.

Lexmark has an interesting development with their inkjet cartridges which they began some years ago with toner cartridges. A court decision required Lexmark to allow their cartridges to be refilled. However, Lexmark would naturally prefer that you only buy from Lexmark. Thus, Lexmark has developed the following system:

  • Lexmark offers for sale two different versions of the same cartridge:
  • The regular version (#23, #24, #28, #29, #41, #42) is not refillable. It is the "Return Program" or "Prebate" cartridge. Supposedly, when you buy this cartridge you agree to return the empty cartridge to Lexmark. In return, Lexmark gives you roughly $5 off the retail list price of the cartridge.
  • The "A" version (#23A, #24A, #28A, #29A, #41A, #42A) can easily be refilled. However, the price of the cartridge is roughly $5 higher than the regular version, so most people unknowingly buy the regular version.

1. Peel the label off of the top of the cartridge.
2. See the squiggly lines leading to small holes.
3. Drill the holes larger using a 1/16th inch drill.
4. Hold the cartridge so the contacts are away from you. NEVER touch the contacts with your fingers.
5. The top hole is Magenta (red). You can insert a syringe needle into the hole and test the color if you are doubtful. Left is Yellow and Right is Cyan (blue).
6. Fill a syringe with the appropriate color and insert it into the cartridge until it is at the bottom. Lift the syringe back out until it is halfway between the bottom and the top. SLOWLY inject the ink (about 6 to 8 ml) into the cartridge, too fast and you will trap air inside. Watch the hole and when the ink starts to come out remove about 1/2 ml of ink.
7. Clean your syringe and repeat this process with the other colors.
8. Verify ink flow by pressing the ink head against a wet paper towel. You should see three solid lines of color.
9. Replace the label and install the cartridge into your printer.
10. Print a test page and run a cleaning cycle if print results are unsatisfactory.

Ok i have the solution to this, it's taken a while to sort out but it works.

The printer only "remembers" the current cartridge, so even if you refil this cartridge it will not register as full and you will still get those annoying messages.
Doing a uninstall and re install also does NOT rectify the problem...... it is still remembering that cartridge.
The only way around the problem is to have a spare cartridge for each of the black and colour. When you see the ink low warning, simply take the cartridge out of the printer and replace with the spare re filled one, obviously don't throw the one you have taken out away.

Once you have installed your spare, do a print allignment page and you will find everything back to normal.
Only once so far has the software tried to tell me that the replaced cartridge was low when it was in fact full, however it kept on printing for weeks still showing low on the screen......... Lexmark don't you just love emmm....... NOT !

You can not as far as I am aware fill these cartridges and get them to work, the printer will see them as empty and cancel the print. I have tried many solutions and still unable to trick the printer into thinking they are a new refilled cartridge. I have tried all the tricks mentioned in other forums such as taping over certain contacts on the cartridge but this does not work also.

If anyone has the answer please let us know so I can put this one to rest.

My roommate's X 4550 only remembers last cart installed. To re-fill these carts, two carts each color needed. When carts need re-filled, rotate stored one ones into printer and wall-ah! print away. I B on my way to purchase second color cart.

I need to reset my ink levels so my X3550 refilled cartridges

If you have refilled the cartridges you got along with the printer, you can't reset them. 23 and 24 are not meant to be refilled. They are what Lexmark call "return program cartridges"- they can't be refilled, you can send them back to Lexmark ( that's why they are called "return cartridges"). You need to buy either 23A and 24A or 34 and 35, those cartridges are refillable.
Here is a link to Lexmark, with a list of cartridge compatibility for your printer:

I have lexmark x3580 printer i refilling the ink cartridge i have this massage in printer left cartridge Incorrect ( the black )

“Lexmark does not support the refilling of its ink cartridges. Refilling the ink cartridges can cause them to leak, thus clogging or even damaging the print head. Any damage to your printer caused by refilled ink cartridges may not be covered under warranty”. Please use genuine Lexmark cartridges for best results.

I have a Lexmark x3550.Have just refilled black cartridge with new ink from filljet container by drilling hole in top of no.23 OYCLBP9 cartridge.Put in 25ml of ink. After replacing cartridge get a message...

Hey....I solved the lexmark out of ink problem!!!HA!!! what you have to do if you want to refill these is "pop" off the top of the cartridge. It is not easy as it is glued down...using a small screwdriver preferably a small flat jewelers screw driver you can peel back the plastic that seperates the "lid" of the ink cartridge. you have to use a little force but you can get it off. Once you do this the cartridge will always read full!!!!!! just tape it or super glue it back on. You never have to take it off again! although I recomend cleaning the ink sponges inside every 3 refills. but this works great.....ha ha lexmark.....I got ya!!!!

Refill instructions for lexmark 23 & 24

You will have to buy a new one because the return program cartidges are not reuseable. I read somewhere that the usage is connected to the cartridge, so even if you exchange one with a friend, theirs will not work on yours. Not sure how this works, but I had one and could not figure out how to bypass this feature. Best solution I found was to buy a new printer. It was cheaper than buying new cartridges.

Refilling cartridge

cucujo, you were not as lucky as lovetofish! Sooner or later the printer will win.
The money for printer manufactures is not in the printer, it's in the ink refills. With this in mind many printer Mfg's have added small chips to their ink cartridges. These chips track the amount of times the printer prints. The software knows you are adding ink to the cartridges. Many people find they can get around this by keeping their old cartridges & refilling. Some HP users keep as many old cartridges as three. Rotating ink cartridges. This seems to work for most printers. Suggest you try the same. Continue to fill you're ink cartridge but replace with a new cartridge. When it empties replace with another new. The next three will be re-filled ink cartridges. Always refill as soon as possible, never turn ink cartridges on their sides. Keep refilled cartridges in an airless zip-lock bag, in a cool & dark place when storing.
