I'm having the very same problem as usmc85_8. My other notebook computers work just fine via wireless. This (Acer) computer can only connect when directly connected to the router.

It helped some. I did find though that the ACER laptop will update the wireless device it has and now it shows the D-Link device in my connections box. I will only know if this has solved the problem when I reboot. Lets hope. TY.

PS My Acer 5520 has no switch of any kind in front.

First check in the device manager if you have the correct driver installed

second, make sure that the wireless device is enabled (for acer normally there is a switch infront)

Have 2 computer's in home, on will link t network, other will not even bring up network when attemptingto get on internet via router

Hello,

Usually under these circumstances, one of your computers may not have a compatible wireless network card. An example would be if your computer has a Wireless G Network Card and your router is Wireless N, you might run into problems. You can try reinstalling the drivers for your Network Card. You can also go to the Linksys website and install the installation utility to set up the connection from scratch again.

The router itself is fine, it's the wireless card in your computer that isn't finding the router.

Wireless zero configuration is the feature of Windows XP that allows Windows to detect the available wireless networks and automatically connect to the most preferred wireless network.

It is enabled by the Wireless Zero Configuration service in Windows XP. It provides auto wireless network detection when you switch on the computer.
Follow the steps below to verify that the service is running:
1. Go to Start and right click My Computer. Select and click Manage.
2. Computer Management window will appear. Under Services and Applications, select Services.
3. Check for the service Wireless Zero Configuration. Make sure that it is started and that the startup type is set to automatic.
computer-management.jpg4. If it isn't, double-click the service. If the startup type is not set to automatic, click on the dropdown arrow and and change it to automatic. Click OK at last.
autostart-wireless-zero.jpgIf your wireless adapter driver does not support wireless auto onfiguration, you will notice the following:
- The network adapter does not appear as a wireless network adapter in Network Connections. It appears as a LAN adapter, similar to an Ethernet connection.
- The properties of the wireless connection do not have a Wireless Networks tab.
- You do not receive a Windows XP notification bar message indicating that wireless networks are available.
To get the most out of your Windows XP wireless experience, you should contact wireless adapter manufacturer to obtain the latest version of the drivers that support this XP feature.
If not, you must manually configure wireless network settings using the configuration software supplied with the wireless network adapter.

Wireless Switch On Emachine Laptops

Hello,

Try the Fn+F2 combination. This will turn on/off the wireless network. You should see the wireless connection icon on your system tray. Just double click on it and connect to your specific network.

NETGEAR Wireless G USB Adaptor Problems

I contacted Bigpond after my whole internet collapsed due to my amature abilities in fixing the internet. >_<" yet they fixed my internet connection by disconnecting my current (DLINK DIR-300) router from the network. hmmmm... the technician also confirmed that my current broadband modem (2WIRE 2071-A) isnt capable of supplying a shared connection to more than one computer!! she also directed me towards a modem with an inbuilt wifi router that "supposedly" is the best option right now. (2701HGV-W) I'm a bit shaky and the stupid NETGEAR adaptor problem still exists - im willing to buy the new modem if its guaranteed to abolish this problem and give me a better internet wise outlook - please any suggestions will be appreiciated =)

Does it say limited connection to network? You're connecting it through a wireless router right? Do you see your wireless router when you search for networks?
I had similar problem with my previous Dell laptop. Wireless use to work untill one day it just stopped, found the networks, but kept giving me limited connection whenever i tried to connect. I found out the problem is linked with the driver. Dell laptop i had was also on XP OS.
Maybe try reinstalling the drivers. After I formatted my computer and reinstalled drivers, it started working again.
Hope this helps.
