Problems with MSI K8N Neo3 motherboard ethernet adapter

I recently bought a new MSI K8N Neo3 motherboard, as im building a computer out of old parts i had left over from other newer computers. I put the motherboard in and installed the rest of my hardware, installed windows XP, installed motherboard drivers for ethernet/IDE/SMbus but for some reason the ethernet adapter is not working. in the device manager it is listed as "other devices" even though the drivers have been installed, it appears as "ethernet controller" with a big yellow question mark and a yellow exclamation mark over it. ive tried disabling/enabling it, even tried uninstalling it and then rebooting to reinstall, still no luck. the drivers i used were downloaded from the MSI website so when windows asks me to automaticaly install drivers from a removable source, i of course cant do that. if i install them manualy all goes well and it asks me to reboot, the ethernet controller still does not work before or after rebooting. any help on this issue is appreciated.

details of the motherboard can be found here:
for some reason i wasnt able to hyperlink it.

thanks for the help, i will try these steps now. hopefully i can use the nvidia websites drivers without the need for it to scan my system, as i can only access the internet on my main computer (the one im having a problem with is simply the old parts that i have upgraded put back together) i will post again if this solution works.

I have a Internet conexion by phone but that board hasn`t a integrated fax/modem unit so I can't use my internet conexión. What can I do??

Should I fix a PCI fax/modem card?? Which one?

The integrated SIS networkcard on my MSI motherboard failed the first month & the shop I bought my computer from "gave" me a 10/100 ethernet card rather than replace the motherboard.

Now that 2nd LAN card is failing (sending out packets, but not receiving any). At home (plugged into the COMCAST cable), the 10/100 shows as being unplugged, the SIS shows it's looking for a connection; at work, both cards show that they can send info, but not receiving any. This new "condition" suggests something else may be wrong--any ideas would be appreciated!

Since I cannot get to NVIDIA through the network card, can I "pigtail" my computer via a USB connection so that the NVIDIA tools can diagnose what to do? thanks!

Hi mush187, the SMbus controller is basically your chipset drivers. If for some unseen odd reason it did not install correctly you will not be able to install other drivers. (which seem to be the case). Here is the link to you're board & it's drivers. (click on it).

This is nVIDIA's web site. This is where you need to go in order to download & install the latest chipset drivers.

I understand if you can't get you're network driver installed you can't get to the nVIDIA site. So can you install a PCI network card, (temporarily)? The cool thing about nVIDIA's web site is it will scan your system & suggest the proper updated software.
It's only a suggestion.... In either case the MSI link above will allow you to download the drivers you need.

Good Luck!
If I can be of more service, just ask.

Windows can be stubborn, indeed. I did not check if the drivers were the same. Glad you did! Still this is why I suggested nVIDIA scan your PC.

Install you're missing drivers in this fashion. (A more direct method). Open device manager. Scroll down to you're yellow ! point. Right click once on that device & left click update driver. Windows hardware update wizard opends. Click No, not at this time & than click next.

In the next windows click, Install from a list or specific loacation & click next. Remove the check mark from the Search removable media by left clicking once on the green check mark.

Now click the Browse button & find the driver you either got from MSI or nVIDIA. All you need to do is find the correct folder. You do not need to find the setup.exe file at all. Windows will know the correct folder because the OK button will highlite it's self. It will help if you know which folder holds the correct driver software though. If windows still does not like the driver after re-booting than there is a problem with the(integrated, on-board network card). You can enter you're bios & disable the ethernet card. The yellow ?/! may still show up in windows device manager. Suggest you replace with a PCI network card.

Take you're pick or buy local.

Let's hope this works & you won't need the nic card!

Asuming the fan itself has failed, buy an aftermarket fan. They are usually self-adhesive.

Vista Home Premium locks up on a load

How long do you wait before you determine it is locked up? Vista uses minimum graphics to facilitate a faster install. It may seem like nothing is going on when Vista is loading in the background. If it is locking up try a reinstall. Are you upgrading or going a new install?
