Dell latitude d600, am installing a replacement HDD, when I boot up laptop a screen comes up asking for password authentication system You cannot access the data on this computer without the correct password Please type in primary or administrator password and enter ????? How do I fix this ???? Tony
Remove BIOS battery. Short BIOS jumper or leave the battery out for a long time(Over night, maybe)
This should default the BIOS to having no pass word present. If that doesn't work then evidently Dell has one within the BIOS . Just ask them.
You can reset the password easily by removing the battery which will clear the CMOS. If you aren't comfortable doing this, perhaps you can find someone who will do it for you. It's not hard to do, and you won't hurt anything as long as you unplug the computer and discharge any static from your body. (Just touch something metal - like the rails on your desk or something else.)
