Found this on one of the other forums :-

1) The Chips that are built into the cartridges DO NOT sense the ink level they just count the number of printouts and either light when they THINK the ink level is low or flash when they THINK the ink level has run out. Refilling the cartridges does not affect this.

2) if only one cartridge light is flashing either black or the color, printing from both colors is possible.

3) if BOTH lights are flashing which would imply the error light is flashing also, (error E5) then game over the printer locks and printing or scanning is not possible

4) The solution is simply to replace EITHER the black or EITHER the color cartridge to continue printing. The new genuine Canon cartridge which contains the 'full' chip will allow printing.

5) obviously replacing the black cartridge is the most effective method and simply refill the color cartridge when necessary which everybody as already probably done.

E5 error how to rectify the error on the printer

I have an MP160 which is now over 7 years old and still going strong. I refill my own cartridges and sometimes get the E5 error after refitting a cartridge. More often than not this fix works for me.
With both cartidges fitted and the printer turned on, open the printer top and wait for the cartridge carrier to move left then right. Immediately it begins to move to the right, quickly push the carrier with your finger as far to the right as it will go and close the top. If you hesitate too long and the carrier starts its travel to the far left, close the top and wait until the whirring noises stop and try again. That usually clears the E5 error.
If it doesn't, open the top, wait for the carrier to park in left position and remove and replace both cartridges. After refitting, give each cartridge a gentle wiggle to help ensure that all the electical contacts are properly seated in the carrier, then close the top.
Note that if the cartridge is faulty, in my experience the E5 cannot be eliminated.

How to error e5 how to go to service mode

Hum....e5 error.

The truth is...there is no solution for e5 error.
U may see some solutions through web, however, non of them works..

The only way you can get out of e5 error, replace with new cartridge..
or...
prevent it...before you face it!!

How?
Whenever you take out the cartridge from printer, make sure unplug the power code first..
and then take and refill or whatever...

And then when you put it back....do it when power code is unplugged as well.

Personally, I refilled and used CL831 more than 8 times..

If you would like to save money, try refill kit by "ROADINK".
Not only they are easy, but also the printing quality is good.
For your better understanding pls check out my youtube video.
And will see how easy ink refill can be done.

My printer is reading error E5... what does this mean?

E5 means your cartridge error. May I know are you using original ink cartridge or yours has been modified before?
I assume you to refill your ink cartridge before because E5 error won't appear after replacing new cartridge.
So, you need to take out both of your ink cartridge and then use a clean cloth to wipe them. After that, slowly put in back into the printer. If the error is still there after wiping it, try to do it till the error is gone.
I had tested this way with my own printer and it works again without needed to buy a new ink cartridge.
All the best and good luck =)

Hi, I have purchased cannot IP 1300 for which color cartridge has been offered free; till last 7 months it has been running smooth with just 1 color cartridge; however, recently I have problems when I try...

As for the solution, pls take out the cartridge from printer.

And then wipe out the circuit part by rubbing alcohol (by Q-tip)

And then put your cartridge back to printer.

If above method is not working..... I think your cartridge circuit part must be shorted.

It happens when you refill your cartridge in Canon...(mostly for color cartridge)

This error is called e5 error, which canont be solved.

You can find the many solution for e5 but unfortunatley non of method can't fix the problem.

Well... as for immediate solution? Replace with new cartridge.

Sorry but this is the best thing u can do at this moment.

E5 is the cartridge error code. Either using the wrong cartridges, faulty cartridges, refilled cartridges or non-genuine cartridges

Error E5

when the error E5 is ocured it means the COLOR cartridge is either the WRONG cartridge, or you have a balck cartridge in the color cartridges spot. Please verify you have the correct cartridges in the correct locations, and that you may not have installed the black in the colors location. Please let me know if this fixes your problem. Thanks //D
