'07 MS Office Documents w/Linksys Wireless G WRT54G

This going to sound crazy and I'm unsure if it's even a Linksys issue. I have a work Compaq 8510p laptop running MS XP with MS Office '07 suite. Here's the deal: when I pull up a Word doc (or Excel doc) stored on my laptop HD when connected to my wireless router at home, it takes forever for the document to pull up. However, if I'm connected to the company VPNthen it loads up quickly - or if I'm not connected to the wireless router at all,it also pulls up quickly. Any idea why this would happen? Is it a router setting? Or is it possible it trying to sync with something at the office network?

    Thanks for your help but unfortunately this did not solve the problem. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

A very challenging problem.

Can you try disabling auto network search? This could be done in your Control Panel/Folder Options/View tab. Pls verify that "Automatically search for network folders and printers" is unchecked.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

    Hi again,

    Copy and appreciate your postback with the information. Other things you can try are:
    1: check which is your default printer and if it is network or local. Ps try making a local printer as your default printer and not a networked one;
    2. try (at least temporarily)c disable your anti-virus program and see if it makes any difference in your loading problem;
    3. try opening you .doc Word in safe mode; hold Ctrl as Word is

    opening, and click Yes to starting in safe mode;
    4. Word (or Excel) might be trying to get Normal.dot from another networked source. Pls verify integrity of your local Normal.dot. Additionally, you can erase it and when you reopen word, a default/new Normal.dot will be re-created.

    Would appreciate postback on any developments (or even the lack of it).

    Cheers.

I have a Cannon MX860 printer that is set up for wireless. My linksys wrt54g router is also configured for wireless - I can access the internet wirelessly from my mac but the router will not acknowledge...

You need to scan and view available wireless network in printer select your home network (linksys).
Once the printer is ready to go, plug it in and power it on. There should be an interactive set up screen on the printer that you can use to indicate the appropriate wireless settings. You'll want to use the same security settings on the printer that you have set on your wireless router. I recommend using the WEP settings so you are not broadcasting any of your documents or online activity the neighborhood.

is your office camera connected to the wrt54g? do you know the ip address of your camera? the port number will come from your camera. If the camera is connecting to the wrt54g, you can open the router configuration page and input your settings there. Call linksys technical support for that. Im using MS 2003... i just both this new pc for my house... my problem now we are using in the office MS 2007... all the my files now i cant open here in my house... i want to download MS 2007 to upgrade...

Office 07 default to 2 new extensions instead of the old .doc extension. 07 uses .docx or .docm (m is for documents containing macros).

If the document is just a standard one, you can go into file save as in 07 and save as.. 2000/03 compatible. 07 then saves the document with a .doc extension (this loses some of the nicer formatting 07 introduces but still looks ok). Then you can open the document at home.

If you cant rename the file as it is locked or something, then go here >

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HA100444731033.aspx

And download the compatibility pack. This lets you open these .docx/m documents with 2000/03 office.

The relevant issue here is what word processor you are using and is the problem that you cannot open the document or the recipient. With Office 2007 you have *.docx extensions that cannot be opened in older Office suites but you can save as a compatible format. Notepad only saves as text and so that is a true mystery or virus that I have never seen. Every Office suite offers 'reader' downloads that allow any reader to open and view. Steve Medley
