Question about Brother HL-2040 Laser Printer

BROTHER Hl 2040 PRINTER WON'T PRING

The printer is 3 yrs old. Last week I got the Toner light. It still printed OK so I kept printing. Then it stopped. I bought a new toner cartridge and installed it. The Toner light won't clear and the printer won't pring.

The same thing happened to my old HL 1440.

    Toner light came on my printer and when I installed a new toner cartridge the toner light is still on and the printer will not print. Printer is only two months old.

    Same problem. Toner light will not go off, and will not print, even with a new cartridge.

    I have a similar problem, printer is about one year old and the toner light is staying on after replacing the toner cartridge.

    I've tried everything, unplugged it, took out cartridge and put back in several times, but the light just won't go off and therefore won't print.

    Has anyone solved this problem or is this just garbage now?

    Have been printing with yellow light lit for some time and no problems, but now it just won't print anything.

    exact same problem, when I look at the printer status, it thinks that it is printing and it all appears to be normal on my computer screen.

    Hi all. I'm sorry that I didn't post the solution to the problem that I posted many months ago. I finally dialed the phone number for Brothers technical support. The technician knew exactly what the problem was, the paper counter, a program inside the printer, did not reset when I installed a new cartrage. He walked me through a complicated sequence of pressing the Blue "GO" button on top of the printer, and waiting for several lights to turn on and off.



    Bottom line is that it worked and calling Brothers technical support was easy and fast.



    In compliance with full disclosure, MY WIFE MADE ME CALL. It must be that, ask for directions when we are lost thing, that men seem to have trouble with.

    I had the exact same problem with the toner light and no printing. I called the Brother help line as was suggested (1-800-276-7746) and they also put me through a series of button pushes and now my printer is working great!

    I HAD the same problem..but because of jorat1346's solution, now my printer can print! YAY! Thanks much jorat1346. You're the best! Btw, mine isnt a glass. It's a circular plastic located on either side of the toner.

I got exactly the same problem and the "reset" didn't do anything. I fixed it by putting a piece of duck tape on magic eye on the cartridge.
Fallow those step to do the same thing as me:

  1. Open the front panel.
  2. Remove the toner and the drum
  3. Remove the toner FROM the drum
  4. On each side of the toner, there should be a little glass. Put the piece of duck tape on one of them. I put mine on the right side.
  5. Put everything back in.
  6. Turn on your printer if it's not already.
  7. Now, the low toner light should be gone and the green light should be on.
Now, you can really empty your cartridge.

If the Drum LED is still lit after replacing the drum unit, the Drum counter may not be reset.
Reset the Drum counter as follows:

  1. Open the front cover.
  2. Locate the control panel button under the LED lights on the left side.
  3. Press the control panel button until all lights are lit, then release it.
    The Drum counter is now reset.

You have a one year warranty with Brother if you need repair. You might shake the toner, or put a small electrical tape over the little round windows on the toner cart. to use the rest of the toner, and press the go button 3 times to print the report that tells you how many prints you've made, you could just be out of toner again...

Brother HL-2040 toner led stays on, won't print


There is a window on each end of the toner cartridge that you can cover with electrical tape and keep printing, it shines a light thru and when the toner is too low it says it's empty. The weight can be misleading.

Sounds like the toner cartridge is faulty. I would change the cartridge.

1- either is out of toner
2-the shutter for the optics is staying closed
3-the gear that engages the toner/drum is not turning it

My Drum was replaced last week yet the light will not go off. So this means that we can not print on our 3 month old HL 2040 laser printer


Did you do the drum reset procedure when you replaced the drum? It was on the sheets of paper (aka instructions) that came with the drum unit.

Sounds to me like the toner - that is the toner cartridge has the wrong toner in it. The drum should be OK - clean it up first and then use a genuine toner cartridge OR you can buy our refill kit on eBay - search for Brother HL2040 - michellem6123

Replaced toner cartridge now doesn't work


If you pull out the paper tray you will see a rubber pick up roller. Clean that roller with a rag and some rubbing alcohol. It sounds as if the roller is slipping and not bringing the paper in fully. Good luck John
