Broken gear wheel in A550 lens

You mentioned an e-bay seller of these wheels.
Do you have a link please?

Thank you in advance.

Thank you for answering. I bought two A550 for my daughters and they now both have the same problem. Really annoying.
Must be a very common problem as this last tooth in the reduction gear chain is far too fragile to sustain anything.

Thank you for answering. I bought two Canon A550 cameras for my daughters last Christmas. They now both exhibit the same "Lens error" problem. And both cameras have the same broken wheel.

Following your very good detailed A550 lens opening method, the last gear wheel in the chain reduction is damaged. Looking at the reduction ratio this last gear should have been made of a much stronger material.

Henrik,

I ordered the gears, but unfortunately, they didn't fit. Sorry, I should have posted an update. I'll see if I have any spare from the cameras that I've repaired. I do know that I have spares for a530/a540, but not sure about a550/a560 cameras.

Hello , my Sony camera DSC - W390 , has been hit over the lens and optical telescopic case. It does come out completely , it just stays trapped and does not get out the optical part any more , just mm out...

Your camera has a lens error, this is such a common fault that I hope you don't mind me pasting my stock generic answer below. No point in reinventing the wheel!

Stuck lenses are probably the most common reason that compact digital cameras get thrown away, but there's a fair chance of recovering use of your camera again

The fault is commonly caused by dirt or grit blocking the mechanism, or due to it having suffered a recent fall or other impact. Another common cause is that the camera was in a pocket or bag and the power button accidentally activated and tried to open the lens against resistance. The mechanism may have simply become dislodged or there may be parts which have broken.

If your camera is still under warranty and has definitely not been subject to misuse then contact the Sony service department in your country to find out about a free repair. (Note: in your case this will be accidental damage, so not covered by the warranty). If the warranty has expired though a professional repair will far exceed the cost of replacing your camera. You will therefore have nothing to lose by trying to fix this yourself.

Please click here and you will be taken to an excellent article provided by the Camera Repair website. For the most part, you'll be guided on how to physically manipulate your camera to try and clear the fault. Although the article mentions Canon a few times, the advice applies equally to all cameras with lens errors and is not model-specific.

If the link doesn't work then cut and paste the following address into your browser:-

Good luck, I hope you manage to use this information to fix your camera, or at least are able to use the information to help decide whether to buy another camera. If you do decide that you have to throw your camera away then don't forget to remove the memory card as it can be used in other devices. Please take a moment to rate the speedy and free answer I have provided for you and any testimonial which you might wish to add is always welcome.

Canon powershot a550 lens cover damaged can this be replaced

It might. You can possibly repair this yourself with the existing parts if they're all still there. Please see this blog article discussing repair of automatic lens covers.

Lens does not move manually

You should not try to manually retract lens because lens has few gears in loading mechanism that can be broke if you put some force in try to rotate on lens.

I am having to manualy open my shutter to take a picture. Any suggestions on a quick fix?

Think you're probably referring to your automatic lens cover. If so, this blog post outlines repair procedures for stuck lens covers. An A400 is used as an example. But it should be somewhat similar for an A550. The exception being that the A550 has four shutter leaves instead of simply two as the A400 has. Highly recommend trying the non-obtruisive fixes first, and giving them a second try before going in there:

Problem with fe-210

Lens gears are probably broken off, or other problem with lens. Will need to replace lens, or may possibly be repaired. I've repaired a few lenses with gears broken off, by replacing broken off posts with similar size plastic pieces(drilled holes and super glued in place, being very careful). Still working months after repaired. Olympus repair shops can replace anything needed, but at a HIGH price; sometimes cheaper to replace camera than to have them work on it.

Lens error message Canon Powershot A550

Canon A550 and A560 have the same body and most of the internal parts, including lens assembly are the same. Canon won't sell individual parts within the lens assembly. There could be two possiblities. One is (unlikely) that the lens assembly components have been knocked off from their position. The other is that because of a knock, or dropping the camera, the gears in the gearbox of the lens assembly are broken. These gears are the same as the ones in A530/A540, and are available from ebay for $12.50 including shipping. Checkout my site for how to open up the camera and the lens assembly to replace these:

http://pkrobot.freehostia.com/MiscElectronics2.htm

For A550 and A560, if you take it to the professional repair shop, it might not be cost effective, since it might cost around $90. Canon does not sell gears, so they might have to replace the entire lens assembly. The new camera is available these days for around $140.
