When travelling with your GPS it may take 20-30 minutes for it to acquire a satellite signal. For it to acquire the signal it should be stationary so when visiting the family or in the hotel leave it on you should get satellite lock.
This is a problem I see very often and it is due to the flip antenna. Garmin is no longer using this style of antenna because moving parts equal less reliable. Anyhow, I have remedied the problem by plugging in an external antenna in the side of the flip antenna. Sometimes this works. If that does not help it is time to get the unit fixed or replaced. To find the closest repair depot to you please contact Garmin 1-800-800-1020
My Nuvi 255w was doing thew same thing. I called Garmin and was told to send it back for replacement or repair. I can only suggest to you at this time to cxontact Garmin customer service
Make sure you are not moving. This way it can triangulate better. Wait for it to recognize at least 3 satellites. Then cruise as you wish as soon as it is synced with the satellites. Also, be sure that you are on an open field with minimal aerial hindrances.
Your problem is normal to all GPS devices. It does take time to acquire satellite signal.
you need to go outside in an open area with no trees around and turn the garmin on untill it receives a sat connection it can take several minutes for it to find it
Im not 100% but im thinking that if the ribbon connecting the reciever to the unit can become dislogged or damaged, im trying to find a replacement ribbon.
