my life cam has the same problem. I can se and hear friends and family on messenger and skype, they can see me but can't hear me. I'm not sure if it's the cam or the settings on my computer. I would appreciate some help since every company wants to charge alot for one little question.

Same problem. Vista hears sound from the Mic on the LifeCam when doing a voice training test, but Messenger not picking up anything. Where is the setting to change the volume for record?Same problem. try unistalling the device from device manager, then reinstalling the drivers from hp. if your sound card is not built into the motherboard, then try to remove it and then put it back in firmly (with the computer turn off of course). if this does not help, a new sound card can be had for cheap from tigerdirect.com
have you checked all leads?if they are all correct and undamaged check that you dont need an spif lead or yellow rca connector,then try watching on a different tv with same movie player ie dvd or video if this works there is a fault with the telly if it dosent theres a fault with your player,its a process of elimination check all componants and cross check that means tvs dvds videos and all leads.
I'm a little unclear as to the problem. I don't understand what you mean by hear a sound when turn off and doesn't show. Does this mean you can't access the drive, or when you turn it off and then turn it back on or reconnect it doesn't show the drive? Do you have 2.0 USB ports in your machine? Be a little more specific please?
