If the result is already calculated and displayed, press the [S<=>D] key It will convert a fraction or radical to decimal. This is always possible. If the result is decimal it may be converted to a fraction or a radical (Not always possible).

If the expression to be evaluated is still in the command line and you have not pressed the [=] key, you can force the result to be displayed in decimal format by pressing [SHIFT][=] instead of just [=].

More permanently. If you do n o care for fractions and radicals, set the Input/Outpout mode to LineIO. To do do press [SHIFT][MODE] to access the (SETUP) screen and select [2:LineIO]

Answer is in the form of a fraction

What is the question? Do you want fractions or not?
  • If you want to perform exact calculations (that is with fractions and radicals) you should set the calculator Input-output mode to MathIO. Even with this mode set as default you can still convert the final result to a decimal number. This can be done 2 ways.
  1. Result is already displayed in fraction/radical format: Press the [S-D] key to toggle between the two formats.
  2. Result has not been calculated yed (expression still in command line), then press [SHIFT][=] to ensure it is displayed in decimal format.
  • If you do not want fractions nor radicals (roots) just set the default Input-Output to LineIO
To set one or the other IO modes, do as follows.
  1. Press [SHIFT][MODE] to open setUp and select [1:MathIO] to select natural display with fractions/radicals.
  2. Press [SHIF¨][MODE] and select [2:LineIO]

While using Casio fx-300ES , I am unable to get answers in decimals. For eg. 3/10...should give 0.3, but the answer is again displayed as 3/10. any way to solve this issue?

The calculator has two Input/Output modes: MathIO and LineIO.

LineIO
LineIO is the old way of entering numbers in calculators and results are always displayed as decimal numbers. Some calculators have a fraction feature and would convert a fraction to a decimal number and back.

MathIO
In MathIO you enter expressions as you would by hand or as you see them written in textbooks.
In this mode, results are by default displayed as fraction or fractions/ radicals.
Conversion
To convert the fraction/radical to decimals you just press the [SD] key. If you press again you cycle through all the available display formats.
So you can (if you want) use the MathIO to manipulate expressions and convert only the last result to decimal. By the way, fractions and radicals are generally more accurate than their decimal representations.

SetUP
If however seeing fractions and radicals is too painful, just set the LineIO as your default mode. To do so press [SHIFT][MODE] to open (SETUP), then select [2:LineIO]

How do i change my calculator from fraction answers to decimal when i'm dividing

If the fraction has just be typed in, press [SHIFT][=] instead of just [=] to get the result displayed as a fraction. However the fraction displayed will be the irreducible form of your fraction (equivalent but reduced to its simplest terms).

If you do not want fractions at all ( input and output)
Press [SHIFT][MODE] and select [2:LineIO]. This is the entry mode of the old generation of calculators.

The other IO mode is MthIO: In this mode fractions are entered as in textbooks, radicals are also entered as in a textbook. If by any chance you like this new IO format but just want the final results displayed as decimal, you can do your calculations in MthIO to get the result. Once displayed the result can be converted into decimal format by pressing the [S<>D] key.

Answers in decimals

The calculator has two Input/Output modes, MthIO and LineIO. In MthIO the results are displayed as fractions or as radicals or a mixture of fractions and radicals. What it means, is that in MthIO the calculator does exact calculations. Radicals in denominators are gotten rid of by rationalization, fractions are reduced to the same denominators before addition or subtraction. Fractions are reduced to simplest form.

In LineIO all results are displayed as decimal numbers.

If a result is exact (fractions and radicals) it can be changed to decimal form by pressing the S To D key, the one above the DEL key.

MthIO is the default IO mode. To set it, press SHIFT MODE and select 1:MthIO. To set LineIO as the IO mode, press SHIFT MODE and select 2:LineIO

I just bought this fx-115es and am entering 5x3.3= and getting an answer of 33/2, althought it is right how do i get it to answer 16.5

Hello,
There are several ways you can extract decimal numbers from this fine calculator.

In MathIO Mode

1. Once a fraction or radical is displayed press [S<=>D] button to convert it to decimal. Pressing it again restores the fraction or radical display.
2. Instead of pressing the [=] key to obtain a result, press [SHIFT][=]. The result will be displayed as a decimal number.

In LineIO
If you do not care for exact calculations with radicals and fractions, just change the default mode from MathIO to LineIO. To do so
press [SHIFT]{MODE][2:LineIO]. In this input/output mode all results are decimal.
Please be informed that with this mode you will not be able to access the formula templates that allow you to enter fraction as you see them in textbooks (the natural display format). You lose other neat functionalities also.

As a suggestion, if you like the natural display for input keep it as default, and press [SHIFT][=] to display decimal results or [S<=>D] to convert display to decimal format.

Hope it helps.

I ask a dividing question like: 8 divided by 10, and it gives it in a fraction how to I cheange a setting so it gives the answer in a decimal?

Hello,
If a number is displayed as a fraction or a radical (square root or other roots) you change it into a decimal number by pressing the [S<=>D] key, just above the red [DEL] key.
If you do not care for fractions or radicals, you configure your calculator to display only decimals. To do that you press [SHIFT][MODE][2:LineIO].
Warning: If you do that you will not be able to enter fractions or radicals in the natural (textbook display)
Another way to display a fraction or a radical as a decimal is to press [SHIFT][=] to get the result not the [=] alone.

Hope it helps.

Casio fx-300ES Default answer readout?

Hello,

Generally, MathIO gives results in fractions or radicals. But sometimes it does not. I tried multiplying or dividing fractions or radicals by integer numbers, and once in while I got a decimal result and was unable to cast it into a fraction or a radical. I was not able to find the pattern.
In lineIO you only get decimal results.
What can one tell you that you cannot determine for yourself? If you appreciate the functionalities of the MathIO, it seems like an insignificant price to pay to press ONE button to switch between displays. It needs to be done ONLY once, for the last result one wants to record.
Your calculator, Your rules. But sometimes one cannot eat the cake and have it too.

Problems with fractions on the Casio fx-115es

Hello,
To convert fractions to decimals or decimals to fractions, you use the [S<->D] key. Each time you press the key the result is displayed in the other format.
Alternatively, If you multiply or divide two integer numbers put a decimal mark at the end of one of the numbers (any one). The result will be displayed in decimal format.

Hope it helps.

Mixed numbers

Proper fraction e.g. 3/5, input 3, divide, 5, =, answer 0.6

Improper fraction, either enter as improper fraction, or enter the whole number first, then +, then the proper fraction as before, then =.

E.g. 8/5 which is "1 and 3/5': enter 1, +, 3, "divide", 5 =, answer is 1.6

Or, just 8, "divide", 5, same 1.6 answer. Why go to mixed number first?

13/5 which is "2 and 3/5", enter 2, +, 3, "divide", 5, =, answer is 2.6. Or, just 13/5, same answer
