Question about HP Pavilion dv4000 Notebook

2 Answers

Desktop problem When i restarted my notebook it would run fine up to the point of loading my desktop icons, however the programs (at the bottom right of the screen)would never load and my notebook would then freeze up. Iv tried restarting my notebook but would get the same result, it freezing up after the desktop icons have appeared.

    Hello Fixhomeslice

Please note, this is NOT a solution yet. This is a 1st step towards pinning down - trouble-shooting the issue you are experiencing.

The area in the lower right-hand corner of your screen is called the "System Tray". (The bar that it rests on is called the "Task Bar".) It is in the System Tray that you will see icons representing programs (not all of them, mind you) that load whenever you computer is started.

We want to determine if the issue is w/ a program that is loading on startup into NORMAL MODE (the mode you "normally" use).

Please, boot your computer into SAFE MODE and see if it boots up OK (doesn't get hung up). The screen will look different but that is OK. In SAFE MODE, the computer is booted w/ minimum functions for diagnostic and trouble-shooting purposes.

If the computer does not get hung up in SAFE MODE, then we need to pin down who the culprit is - which program is causing your computer to hang on boot up into Normal Mode (the mode you "normally" boot into).

THIS link provides instructions for entering Safe Mode.

Have there been any recent changes to your laptop that precipitated this problem?

    (A) new program(s) installed

    (B) program or operating system updates installed

    (C) new hardware installed

    (D) a virus detected on your computer

    (E) program(s) uninstalled

    (F) hardware uninstalled

What steps (other than re-booting your computer) have you taken so far toward addressing this problem?

Anything you can think of could be helpful. The more information you can provide the better.

Please, post back here to let us know the results of this test.

    ***************
Please, post back w/ your answers and any other info. you can provide (the more details you can provide the better) and we'll see if we can get this issue resolved or at least diagnosed for you.

    Thank you
    BJ

Please, choose to boot into Safe Mode without Networking on the 1st try. If it boots OK (doesn't get hung up), then enter Safe Mode again. This time, choose Safe Mode With Networking.

Thank you,
BJ

Sounds like there is a program trying to run that is locking up your computer. what was the last program you installed?

If you know, when booting up, press F8 and go into safe mode. Uninstall that program. then reboot normally.

If this does not work, you may have a virus.

Lets start with this first though.

I have a 5yr old Dell w/XP and use IE and Firefox. Lately I have been unable to access my control panel. I click on start then click on control panel but all I get is the ever aggravating hourglass and...

Here are a couple suggestions. 1.) You can run windows system restore back to a date when you knew your system was running fine.
If that fail to fix your problem than, turn off windows restore. You do not need to enter control panel to do this as long as you have My Computer icon sitting on your desktop. (IF not, right click once on a clear spot on your desktop). From the pop-up window left click once on properties.
Display Properties will open. Click on the Desktop tab. Than click on the Customize Desktop button. Desktop Items will open. Make sure there is a check mark in the box next to, My Computer. That will add the My Computer icon to your desktop.
Right click on it once & from the pop-up window slide to & left click on properties. Click on system restore tab.
Reason for this: if your system has a virus or Trojan it will copy its self into system restore. Turning it off prevents this. 2.) Run your antivirus software & check for issues. 3.) Download the free software named ccleaner; http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ & install it. Run the standard cleaner. Than click on the registry icon and scan for issues. This will remove double registry keys & corrupt keys. Than restart your system. When windows finishes loading click on update windows from the start button. Check for hardware & software updates & install em'. (If any). When you feel everything is running correctly you can re-enable windows system restore & create a restore point.
If everything above did not fix your problem you may have no choice but to repair windows. Load your windows restore CD into your CD-ROM drive and boot to it. Running Dell's restore should repair windows. Most of your data should be fine. Some programs may need to be reinstalled.

Cheers'
Mike

Dell - No icons or start button

to get your Icons back try this.
  1. Right-click the desktop.
  2. Point to Arrange Icons By.
  3. Click Show Desktop Icons.
I would also try this.
Another quick shot, is goto Start, Run, type "msconfig", and click the tab saying DIAGNOSTIC. click apply, restart, and see if your icons are there.

Then I would run a virus scan. you could have a virus on the machine. I recommend MalwareBytes for virus removal. you can get it at www.Download.com

Cant see desktop icons or access Windows anymore. Brand new Nc10.

If the Windows loading progress bar appears after turning ON the Computer and the Computer goes to the blank screen then perform the under given steps.

Press "CTRL+Shift+ESC" key combination to open the Task Manager window.
Next, click on the "Applications" tab and click on the "New Task...." tab located on the bottom of the window.
Then type "explorer.exe" and click "OK".

This would bring you back the Desktop icons and the taskbar.

Hello,

You cannot delete the icon from the task bar as it only displays the start up programs running on the computer. I have given the steps below.

Click start, than click run. In this box type "msconfig" without quotes.
You will see the list of startup programs. Uncheck the ones related to the Simple center Media.
Click Aply, Than click close, than click Restart computer now.

The program will not load automatically and you would not see the icon in the taskbar.

I am sure this will help. Please update me on the same.

Regards,
Sammy
