Desktop problem When i restarted my notebook it would run fine up to the point of loading my desktop icons, however the programs (at the bottom right of the screen)would never load and my notebook would then freeze up. Iv tried restarting my notebook but would get the same result, it freezing up after the desktop icons have appeared.

    Hello Fixhomeslice

Please note, this is NOT a solution yet. This is a 1st step towards pinning down - trouble-shooting the issue you are experiencing.

The area in the lower right-hand corner of your screen is called the "System Tray". (The bar that it rests on is called the "Task Bar".) It is in the System Tray that you will see icons representing programs (not all of them, mind you) that load whenever you computer is started.

We want to determine if the issue is w/ a program that is loading on startup into NORMAL MODE (the mode you "normally" use).

Please, boot your computer into SAFE MODE and see if it boots up OK (doesn't get hung up). The screen will look different but that is OK. In SAFE MODE, the computer is booted w/ minimum functions for diagnostic and trouble-shooting purposes.

If the computer does not get hung up in SAFE MODE, then we need to pin down who the culprit is - which program is causing your computer to hang on boot up into Normal Mode (the mode you "normally" boot into).

THIS link provides instructions for entering Safe Mode.

Have there been any recent changes to your laptop that precipitated this problem?

    (A) new program(s) installed

    (B) program or operating system updates installed

    (C) new hardware installed

    (D) a virus detected on your computer

    (E) program(s) uninstalled

    (F) hardware uninstalled

What steps (other than re-booting your computer) have you taken so far toward addressing this problem?

Anything you can think of could be helpful. The more information you can provide the better.

Please, post back here to let us know the results of this test.

Please, post back w/ your answers and any other info. you can provide (the more details you can provide the better) and we'll see if we can get this issue resolved or at least diagnosed for you.

    Thank you
    BJ

Please, choose to boot into Safe Mode without Networking on the 1st try. If it boots OK (doesn't get hung up), then enter Safe Mode again. This time, choose Safe Mode With Networking.

Thank you,
BJ

Sounds like there is a program trying to run that is locking up your computer. what was the last program you installed?

If you know, when booting up, press F8 and go into safe mode. Uninstall that program. then reboot normally.

If this does not work, you may have a virus.

Lets start with this first though.

Why can i open any of my icons on my laptop all my icons says ie

I would right-click & delete each icon and get Windows 7 build a new copy, You will need to delete the IconCache.db file and restart your computer in order to allow Windows to create a new one.
To rebuild your icon cache:
  1. Close all programs
  2. Click Start, then type CMD into the Search programs and files window.
  3. Right click on the CMD program that is displayed above and select Run as administrator.
  4. Navigate to C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Local. This can be accomplished with the command:CD /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local <enter>
  5. Delete the IconCache.db file that resides there. e.g. DEL IconCache.db /ah<enter>
  6. Close this command window and restart the computer.
If your icons do no immediately return after the restart, simply restart it agin. I've never had to restart more than once myself, but I've heard of others having to restart two or three times. This is most likely due to having programs and/or Explorer processes running before the first restart, e.g. not following step 1.

My laptop's (Toshiba Satellite A105-S361)desktop doesn't bring the desktop icons and the task bar after I loaded AVG 9 antivirus software. Why is that? Would you mind give me a solution, pls?

The desktop icons and the task bar would generally dissappear if you have a virus on the PC. However, sometimes improper software installations may cause undesired results like we have right now. Instead of trying uninstalling anything, try restoring the system to a previous point using system restore.

Cant see desktop icons or access Windows anymore. Brand new Nc10.

If the Windows loading progress bar appears after turning ON the Computer and the Computer goes to the blank screen then perform the under given steps.

Press "CTRL+Shift+ESC" key combination to open the Task Manager window.
Next, click on the "Applications" tab and click on the "New Task...." tab located on the bottom of the window.
Then type "explorer.exe" and click "OK".

This would bring you back the Desktop icons and the taskbar.

Icons on computer are very large after closing a program; restart doesn't fix

Yes, it is normal because your game is running in a lower resolution. When the game is exited properly, then your normal resolution is restored but since it didn't exit properly, it forgot to change your resolution back.

Assuming this is windows xp, right click anywhere on the desktop that does not have an icon and select properties. There you can change the resolution to what it was; since I don't know what it was, you'll have to test a few to see which one looks the way it did before. Then once you find it, press okay and it will save.

To use System Restore to restore Windows XP to a previous state, follow these steps:
  1. Log on to Windows as Administrator.
  2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. System Restore starts.
  3. On the Welcome to System Restore page, click Restore my computer to an earlier time (if it is not already selected), and then click Next.
  4. On the Select a Restore Point page, click the most recent system restore point in the On this list, click a restore point list, and then click Next.

Note A System Restore message may appear that lists configuration changes that System Restore will make. Click OK.
  5. On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next. System Restore restores the previous Windows XP configuration, and then restarts the computer.
  6. Log on to the computer as Administrator. The System Restore Restoration Complete page is displayed.
  7. Click OK.
If you successfully restored your computer to a previous state, and the computer is performing as it should be, you are finished.
