Desoshade is right, its probably a lack of software for playing dvds, if your dvd burner may have come with some if not you can try goo media center for free and its legal (its an open source application) I believe you can find it on sourceforge.net, VLC media player may also help, but more than likely you need a codec that supports playing dvds, they do exist for windows media player but they may not all be free, free alternatives do exists though with and without breaking any laws. MPlayer classic may also be useful, its been a while since I've had to deal with this sort of thing, usually watch movies on my mac or tv anymore hope some of this is useful. good luck.
