Question about Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook

Online gaming "lag"

On World of Warcraft online gaming, my son experiences lags that cause him to "get killed" to the point that he wants to throw his laptop out the window! And just as frustrating is that his brother experiences no lag.

I'm sorry, but I can't figure out how to respond to the additional information questions I've been asked. When I click on the email link to respond to the question, I am directed to this page and I can't find where to answer each one separately. So I'll answer them all here: Oldnovii's 1st question regarding router or wireless -- the answer is wireless and the service provider is Time Warner (was Adelphia) and to answer Oldnovii's 2nd question and Thrice's question, the brothers each have their own laptops and older brother's connection is no different - wireless and in the same room and not lagging (a newer Acer laptop {Oct '07 vs Jan '07} but I don't know what model). As for sspacecase's suggested "fix", I accidentally rated the response as Best Solution (I was clicking around the site trying to figure out how to answer the questions) but we have not tried the suggestion yet (Thursday evening we'll take a look and see if it makes a difference). Thanks so much everyone for listening. Hopefully our answers to your inquiries may lead to the real fix for this frustrating problem. I'll check back sooner this time. Thanks again. I appreciate your interest.

Is he using a router? If so what is the make and model# please. Is your son wireless? Who is your internet service provider? If you use dsl what is make and model # of your modem? Disregard the last question if you have a combo routr/modem. I know it's alot of questions but these things will help to diagnose the problem. Thanks.

Lag switch

A lag switch is a mechanism installed on a home network that allows you to insert delays into the flow of local traffic to the Internet. They are typically used by online gamers who wants to cheat (a gamer who does not want to admit that they are very poor at the game). Mostly used in FPS games to throw off their enemies which will then allow them to make an easy kill.

I have a game lag(games like War craft and Counter strike)...all drivers are up to date..system spec are also high..dont know what to do..plz help(( my laptop is amilo li 1718..the game lag is not related...

that unit may have decent processor specs but that means nothing because the video card for those are a ATI Radeon 200M. World of Warcraft does nto support that video card correctly and is too slow to make the graphics not lag.

counter strike source on full low everything will run fine on this video card but the game will look bad.

Graphics lagging, stuttering in world of warcraft

Try this once
World of Warcraft System Requirements
The World of Warcraft system requirements are impressive. World of Warcraft requires a large amount of memory, hard drive space and, above all, a solid
internet connection.
For a Windows system, the minimum World of Warcraft system requirements are as follows:
- Intel Pentium III 800 MHz or AMD Athlon 800 MHz processor
- at least 512 MB of RAM,
- 32 MB graphics card,
- DirectX 9.0,
- 6.0 GB of hard drive space
- 4x CD-ROM
- 56k internet connection.
However, the recommended World of Warcraft system requirements are substantially higher:
- Intel Pentium IV 1.5 GHz or AMD XP 1500+ MHz processor
- 1024 MB of RAM
- 64 MB 3D graphics card
- broadband internet connection
- A two-button, scroll-wheel mouse is also recommended.
Millions of players connect daily to the World of Warcraft servers, and the amount of information being transferred from any one computer to the main terminals is enormous. But with all of these numbers and with all of these devices, frequent gamers know they will need to go above the minimal system requirements to experience the game fully. The minimal World of Warcraft system requirements only guarantee the game to run; they do not guarantee the game to run in a playable fashion.
There are some other known issues to keep in mind
- Some video cards may experience problems displaying certain textural effects while playing. Graphic issues may include colors shimmering across static textures, textures that appear solid green or white, and patches of texture or even geometry that are invisible.
- World of Warcraft/Burning Crusade requires the latest version of DirectX.
- Also, it is important that your video drivers are up-to-date and compatible with the latest version of DirectX. Outdated or incompatible video drivers can cause a variety of video and game play issues.
Something else you should keep in mind is that World of Warcraft had multiple expansion packs and down-loadable patches and these are also a factor into the World of Warcraft system requirements. Overtime, the specifications have shifted, and will keep shifting in the future; what was once acceptable to run the original game is no longer adequate for some expansions and patches. This will force players to upgrade their computers, if they wish to run the latest versions of the game. Gamers really have no choice; in order to compete, they must have the latest World of Warcraft software and a system that meets at least the recommended requirements; otherwise, you will keep stumbling around.

Lagging

if it is only while during online play then it is your internet speed connection is too slow if it all the time while playing the game wether it be on or offline then your graphics card is not advanced enough to support this game mainly because of the amount of graphics ram on your card try upgrading to a new graphics display card! i hope this helps!

Well, i was playing World of Warcraft today, and randomly everything started lagging pretty hard, so i restarted my cpu, and now i can't even been on for 5 minutes without the computer freezing up...

if you keep reset on to your CPU this will affect to your Hard Drive. When your online games WOW very lag then do not let that online game on play to your Computer. You know or maybe your Computer are not enough to run this game. Check all the plug in play device which are capable to run this game. Your VGA Compatibility e.i AGP or PCI-E, Memory speed e.i DD1, DD2 & DDR3 and mostly Games Accelerator Programs.
Hope this tip might help you.
Good luck!

If you tried my solution, then you would have opened all ports, so ports would not be your cause of lag at the moment. The thing is, you do not need to open any ports at all to connect to a game server, you only need to open ports when you BECOME a game server. The lagging will be down to your Internet connection, try to find a gameserver with a ping below 100. Alternatively, look for programs that consume your Internet connection like programs that are used to download MP3s and Applications as these will cause your game to lag heavily. Anyone else on the network may also be downloading or uploading, which will have an effect on your game, too. However it is most definitly not a problem with your ports.
