I had the same problem. I upgraded to Windows Vista recently. At first everything was running smoothly. After installing all my software, at some point windows vista did no recognize my cd/dvd driver. I searched the web to see if anybody was having the same problem and I found this link . I followed the instructions and I was able to recover the cd/dvd driver. But the problem continue at different intervals. I did some more research on the web only to find out that other people that had the same problem found out that the culprit was itunes. I had the latest version of itunes 7.6 installed on my laptop. I removed itunes from my machine and the problem went away.

I have a LG laptop with an external USB powered DVD/CD combo drive. It worked fine for a long time, then all of sudden stopped working with the Vista unable to recognize the Combo drive. As suggested by one of the users, I uninstalled iTunes 7.6 and it didn't work.

I even went to the LG website to dowload the firmware updating software, but the problem is that it needs work in WindowsXP... which does not help!!

So my drive is still NOT working.
Vista sucks, unstable piece of ****... should have stuck to WinXP Pro.

After inserting DVD movie I get message that it would not play in windows media player because of missing DVD decoder. I loaded all drivers off the LG disc, was there not a DVD decoder included or do I...

Windows Media Player, and many others, will not play everything, regardless of your hardware and it's supporting software.

To overcome this, I recommend a free media player such as VLC (Video Lan) which is free and has a huge amount of codecs and a multitude of other features, including the abilitiy to play most "Region Locked" movies. There are several other good free ones also such as GOM etc, but I prefer VLC due its' mutifaceted capabilities.

For DVD drives, no special driver software is required. The drives will work with generic drivers provided with all standard operating systems out of the box.

However, DVD movie playing is *not* done by a driver, it requires an application installed on the PC.

For Windows, AFAIR only Windows 7 can play DVD movies out of the box, using Windows Media Center.

All other versions of Windows require a commercial or free player program, e.g. WinDVD (Corel) or PowerDVD (Intervideo) or VLC (VideoLAN, free).

For burning data or movie DVD, also an application program is needed. Windows Vista and later have some limited support for ISO and UDF files systems written to DVDs. Personally, I like CDBurnerXP for data, and Slysoft's CloneDVD / AnyDVD combo for video.

I'm using lenovo y500 series 4EQ laptop/vista home basic.however my DVD drive (matshita DVD-RAM-UJ-85JS) doesnt recognize dvds, blank DVDs in certain but it recognizes cds that came with the service pack

It may be necessary to upgrade the "firmware" (software residing inside the DVD unit) to recognize the "newest" of blank DVD media.

Each "blank" disk has an identifier electronically written onto the disk -- if the firmware does not recognize that identifier, it needs to be upgraded in order to recognize it.

Check Toshiba's "support" web-site for a firmware update.

Dvd driver not recognized

This is probably a registry problem, or at least mine was. My LG worked fine then disappeared and device manager had a yellow sign and said it was a corrupt driver. The problem is addressed in the MS Knowledge base Article ID: 314060. Essentially you need to go into the registry, find the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} that refers to DVD drives (there will be a number of keys by that name), and erase the entry for Upper Filter, and for Lower Filter. Then save and reboot the machine.
