Mercury Mountaineer sputters and backfires when climbing a hill
When the rpms are low and there is a load on the engine like pulling a hill it will sputter and backfire but it goes down the road just fine otherwise.
The only light to come on is the check engine light. It will flash when it backfires then goes solid. If I shut off the vehicle then start it back up again the light goes out. When are you losing oil pressure?? ie..When it is cold and warms up..when you increase the engine RPMs by giving it gas..when it is under load like climbing a hill, or with a lot of passengers, or pulling something..etc.
Sounds pretty normal for a 4 cylinder car, if that is what you have. It could also be considered to be normal for a 6 cylinder car. The cars with the smaller motors are designed to downshift in high load situations such as steep hill climbing. This is to compensate for lack of torque. It keeps the motor in it's power band so you have the power to climb the hill.
I would check fuel pressure first. According to the parts book that engine could have a distributor or two coil packs. If it has a distributor with a cap and rotor those parts could be faulty. Is the check engine light on when the engine is running ?
Depending on which engine you have, this sounds like bad sparkplug wires, or a bad coilpack,if you have the 4.6 engine then you have 8 coilpacks one for each cylinder, the best way to pinpoint which coil is bad is to have the computer scanned for history codes, maybe it picked up the misfire and stored the cylinder that was misfiring, hope this helps.
First thing is to check the transmission fluid. If the fluid level is good - have it checked by a transmission shop. Give them as much info as you can about when it slips - cold, climbing hills, going from second to high gear, etc.
